Tips and advice on first rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have two different LFS, luckily, who have tanks this size and bigger in stock currently. Also, building an indoor pond is a possibility as well, with a few 50 gal tank filters. Is as surprised to see tanks this size at a shop actually.

If you're going to buy new I'd suggest really putting thought into the system you want as far as (assuming your going with a sump) overflow locations, type of overflow (herbie, beananimal, etc) size of plumbing, filtration options. I guess I'm saying.... don't just buy what's easily accessible, but what you'll be happy with for many years to come.

See that's something I never thought of honestly. I have my mind set on a pretty common design, but I never thought to take the time and maybe try something more advanced for better results.

Your filtration is literally the life support for your fish. That is equally as important as learning about the fish itself. I'd suggest doing LOTS of research on filtration (and especially specific to rays).

As far as set up goes, the layout of your future home can play a big part on how you want to set things up. For example, I have to have my tank set up with the right hand side in the corner of the room. So when I ordered the tank I had the overflow located on the left side to have easier access. If I was blindly ordering this tank before I knew these details I could've put the overflow on the right and had to deal with a total pain in the *** set up for years to come.

You will be fine as you already know you need a wider tank. Just make sure you have enough bio and at least a 450 gal sump for starters lol.

A 450 gal sump? And yeah, think I could cycle the bigger tank with my current filter and a few silver dollars for a couple weeks? Use water from current tank to water change on bigger tank once a week for like 3 weeks?

Woah. I'm definitely not doing anything right for my ray if I need a 450 gallon sump. Oddly enough he seems happy and content with his food supply and "toys".

I'd just add the media and get it started with half the old tank water and fill up the rest with new water and then slowly add the rest of your purposes tankmates. Then add the ray when the tank is cycled.

LOL, with the media I have for one of my tanks, I can comfortably say I wouldn't be scared to house 10 rays at 18" - 22" in that tank. If I did a 450gal sump for his size tank, then mine would be an 8k gal sump for that one setup lol.

What I was trying to get at is other than the adequate width for the rays when they are bigger, he would need a filtration system enough to handle the bioload of his rays.

I'd go with a 2.5' width for males and a 3' for females if you're getting wild caught Motoros.

DB junkie DB junkie speaks of a female motoro that fills up her 8'x4' and eats an obscure amount of food each day and births 20 pups a litter but I haven't seen the video of it.

You're better off waiting for Hystrix. They can last a while in 2' wide.
