TLkmDN's FULL UPDATE of all fish (17/4/09)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I suppose in such a tropical climate a wels would really grow much too fast and could be a real danger to even some of the larger fish. But it would be very interesting to keep one in tropical conditions to let it grow for the whole year. In their original habitat they have a long winter time which slows down their growth.
But I think the pool would look even much better if there would be sand and some rocks on the ground. I did this too at my big outdoor aquarium pond, and the result was really great. Granite rocks together with sand can create a very nice scenery. Furthermore it will probably help to filter the water, as bacteria will grown in the sand and clean the water.

yehhh it would look really pretty but i never really thought sand or plants were practical because my RTC would just uproot most of the plants if i put them inside....and if i put a large tree or sumthing, it wud just take up valuable swimming space. BUt it is definitely an idea to consider for my new pond if it is MEGA LARGE!

And yes i agree that a fully grown wels wud be crazyyy it wud definitely be a threat to all of my fish! even at a fully grown size....however, it wud take years and years to reach the kind of size that my pond cud not handle.

By then i might have my dream ABOVEGROUND pond with a viewing glass....who knows wat the dimensions of that cud be...hehe ;)

I dunno, a lot of people have pools there. My cousin has a good sized pond at his too, full of koi tho, i may have to re-educate him.
hahaha yer koi.....my fish eat those for breakfast!!! x_X

If my own pond is finished (I will post about the construction probalby this week), I can show you some photos how I made the bottom with sand and granite. It is actually an above-ground pond with viewing-glasses. I thought also already about the possibility to make a normal big pond with an instaled viewing-. Gravel similar to those often used in tanks could perhaps be even better, because it doesn´t cloud the water even if fish burrow in it. But a washed sand without small particles should work as well.
I think you would not even necessarily need plants, but moss on stones would be surely a nice-looking alternative which would be probable not harmed by the fish. Some small roots would be also a nice decoration, they don´t have to be that big that they reduce the swimming room. But it can actually look very cool when the fishes swim between the arches of a root or even a small tree, especially when moss or algea grow on it. At the moment I have still no good root, but I will surely add at least one larger piece to my aquarium-pond.

There's a public aquarium near me that has 1meter+ wels in with 2ft rtc, 2ft tsn, and a school of large cigar sharks and it seems fine with them. it's so much bigger than anything else in there i didn't see it at first even tho it ws right infront of me! Shows it is possible tho.

Satans Goldfish, post pics of the wels in the aquarium pls!

TLKMDN, I think a wels would be ok with your other fish. As long as the other fish are big, no problems. My wels hangs out with my pacman cat with no aggression because they are of equal size. A wels eating a 5+ ft RTC that has such a wide head, probably not. Its not going to get 5 ft in one year so don't worry.

I have also seen in Berlin a big tank with twoe wels around 1,50 m, some sturgeons and big pikes, and they did well too. I think this can work if the wels have always enough to eat, but I also read in german forums about people who had smaller wels in their tanks, that they ate or attacked other fish.
Just look at this video, I suppose the fish the wels eats were to feed it, but I suppose it would do the same with other fish too:

A further problem is that a wels which is kept in a big pond in tropical climate would probably show never-seen fast growth. Even in the warm regions of Italy and Spain where thy were introduced they have to slow down their metabolisms during winter, but in a region where they can eat and maintain a high metabolism, they could probably reach a length of 1,5 m + in a really short time, i.e. within some years.
