TO ADD AIR OR NOT?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont use airstones only because there is major surface disturbance with my filter and i have no lid. The fish do fine and they havnt jumped, with the exception of one but he landed in the bowl of flakes so I think he was just hungry. Hes the fatest fish I have hes like a pig.

sorry wrong name guess its allan.

No worries.... Thought u were being sarcastic, as I've seen a few 600+ gal setups that have a media chamber and a bubbler under to aid in o2 Exchange with bb, and just general aeration as well :)

Yes it will help, especially if your tank temp is warmer, higher temps equal less oxygen. Always a good idea imo. If you don't like the look run it in ur sump.

X2. I would add it. Can't hurt only can help so why not add it

Not withstanding that the fish "play in the bubbles", there is a MUCH better reason to aerate the tank. If your filter should malfunction (ie stop), the air supply will keep your fish alive by continuing to oxygenate the water. The air supply is your "shock absorber" to avert a possible disaster.

I lost a whole tank full of fish when my canister filter quit. If i had air stones in the tank(i do now) I would have woken up to live fish instead of tank of floaring ones
. Air stones is a GRRRREAR idea.

Will fish really die over night without filtration?

They will die with no oxygen exchange. Still/stagnant water equals bad water. Fish have 1-6 hours before death depending on size, relative of course....bubbles, filter outputs, power heads all have current and gph.

No disrespect but then how do they ship fish? I know they put air in the bags but isn't the top of the water and the air in the room kind of the same concept? If that makes sense.

I believe that the agitation on the surface of the water increases oxygen exchange, but the amount is heavily dependent on how much surface is available. Most in home aquariums don't have the foot print to create a substantial amount of oxygen in this way. Ponds on the other hand have huge foot print for surface oxygen absorption. As also stated earlier, the warmer the water is, the less oxygen it'll have. If you're going to add an air pump to your system, why not just add lrge sponge filters instead of just air stones or wands?
