TO ADD AIR OR NOT?

Fish have 1-6 hours before death depending on size, relative of course...
That's not true.

And I personally do not like bubbles. Makes it look unnatural and like your aquarium has a gas problem. But they don't hurt a thing and if you like how they look, add some.

Stuck in a bowl. No filter or bubbler. Those poor Betta at Walmart. Walmart must pile those dead fish pretty high after a full shift.

Since when does a betta "require" a bubbler? And just as a fyi all pet stores that I've ever been have their bettas in little cups with lids or sitting in a little cube like box with dividers. So, to single out walmart for this is not right.

And yes I believe bettas would like a tank like any other fish, but its not required. My daughters has lived in her one gallon bowl for over a year now and he is always very active. Sorry about the long post, just sometimes gets to me about walmart always being the bad guy when others do same thing even small stores.

I never use bubblers as long as something is breaking the surface. This is why my tanks have hob with other filters.

That was an example of the 1-6 hour fish is dead line that f1vet tried to sell.

I actually agree with f1vet here to an extent. The above example is a very poor one as fish with labyrinth organs are much hardier than a some more active fish. Why not pick a fish that can't breathe air from the surface to argue this point. Put a school of giant danios or silver dollars in a warm tank with no oxygenation and they will be dead before you know it. There are too many other factors to debate at this point but If you still disagree, why not just turn off your filter for 6 hours, set your heaters to 80 degrees and see what happens. What is the worse that could happen right?(don't try this unless you really want to risk the lives of your fish...it is a horrible idea)

The shipping example is a different case because when the bag is moved around the surface is broken which allows for oxygen exchange. If the bag some how stayed perfectly still the whole trip(which is not possible) then the fish probably wouldn't be in good shape.

I agree. If you put a fish in water that has no O2 they will die. If you put fish in a tank with no O2 and high heat you will have cooked dead fish. I disagree on the time frame of a filter going out in the middle of the night and having dead fish in the morning.

I've personally had it happen to me with a heavily stocked african cichlid tank...but every case is different and I'm sure some fish would be fine. Once the first one dies then the water goes bad incredibly fast though and even the toughest fish can't survive forever. Except synodontis catfish...those are pretty much impossible to kill if you tried.

Bettas breath atmospheric air and actually don't do very well in large aquariums. Something about the pressure of a large tall aquarium is to much for bettas, that's what I've been told anyway. Any how, I don't raise bettas so I could be wrong.
