Long story short i stopped at the LFS today ended up talking about how i have a ray and im setting up a new tank and want to do a bare bottom. She was so argumentative about how u r NOT suppose to EVER put a stingray in a bare bottom tank. Now i only have 1 motoro but so i don't consider myself a pro by no means. But i also have seen plenty of u guys on here with bare bottom tanks or with tile in the tank. So i started arguing with her about how i know people who breed rays in bare bottom tanks and so forth. Her biggest defense was with a bare bottom tank u r lessening place for bio and bacteria to build, but would not budge on a stingray being in a bare bottom. Even got to the point to where she asked me if i purchased the ray from them and if so they would take it back before i put it in a bare bottom tank! What do u guys think of this lady?? haha

Her argument for bio filtration is idiotic. She must think the only form of filtration these days is still under-gravel filters. With good filtration (sump or canister) you DO NOT need substrate for bio filtration.

you should have atleast sand as a subtrate for all rays

Thats wut i have now, but honestly im sick of the way u have to clean it. If i do have sand it will be a very thin layer of it. Right now i have about an inch think and again im sick of how u have to clean it. Ive seen many people on here with bare bottom so i think im going with that.

I dont see how bacteria can establish on sand when it is constantly being thrown about. Its got a better chance of doing so on the larger area of exposed glass.

Okay so that's backwards.

IMO it's fine to have a bare bottom tank
I think it's a lazy practice
that looks very artificial in anything < 300gal
and I will probably never do it

glass??? Does anybody use filters these days? :nilly:

I think both ways are fine ,it's what you like.

In person i like a small amount of fine round gravel called caviar
Because i like to see my rays dig themselves in.
Bare bottum has it's advantages ,easy to clean no waste buildup etc.
Just pick what YOU like and don't listen to that lady anymore:)
