To sump or not

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Since I have a peninsula, I thought that was essentially the best choice for me since I needed to be free of plumbing from three sides. My tank has been running for over 4 years and I have never had to need to clean/vacuum the overflow box as there's no detritus or anything to clean. I do every 6-9 months wipe the hard water build up on the teethe and make sure nothing stuck in the strainer on the full siphon. I'm just anal about that but it's not needed.

I wouldn't rule out not having them installed. If I were to do it again, I may have added 6" additional box on my end of the tank, maybe. Here are some pictures for visual.

good luck with your set-up - it's exciting getting a new tank!

I love that damn fish man.

Tank ordered, with overflows.

From my research it’s seems like the bean animal setup offers, dual contingency’s, requires 4 holes and is quiet.

This tank will have 4 predrilled holes, all 1”. Maybe 2) 1”/2) 3/4” - need to dbl check .

CAn I run the full siphon and e drain in 1 overflow and the return and dorso in the other overflow?

And put ball or gate valve on the full siphon.

Can you comment on setting up the bean animal in the predrilled tank?

What drains would you put together?

Got taxes done early and went a little crazy on equipment.
Ordered the EcoTech Vectra m1/ Will still add ball valve to full siphon but can also dial back the pump
And a trigger systems ruby 36 sump.

J jaws7777 dual overflow box is similar to what you have, OP.

I would suggest gate valves for the full siphon. Not that ball valves wouldnt work, just finer tuning with gate valve.

I run the Vectra for a closed loop, so let me know if you have any questions. It stopped running in 2 years and Ecotech sent a used replacement for me.

I will probably run submerged as a return- what made you choose closed loop- does it give you more flow options?
I’m just curious if it makes sense, to keep the full siphon and e drain in one overflow and the return and dorso in the other.

Ive never run a bean animal. I understand the principle but wouldnt want to steer you wrong

Sorry for the confusion. I meant to point out that I too use a Vectra, that is used for a closed loop circulation pump. I also have a (submerged) Waveline pump for return. I really like the Vectra (L1). Truth be told, I am a bit disappointed the motor crapped out for not even two years. I don't say this to discourage you from the M1 - I still feel they are great pumps. Had it been any other company, I also wouldn't have received a replacement once past the warranty period.

Some folks, including me use the Herbie drain method. Although, I do have the third e-drain. For the BA, I believe you'll require 3 drain/durso-standpipes. You can read more about it at his site.

The 3rd drain had me confused. From what i remember that os called the open channel drain. I though that drain also had a valve and wasnt a true gravity fed durso. Im probably wrong.

Im not saying either method is better than the other but i had a hard time grasping how the ed rain is sized in a bean animal be because of the open channel. I guess just over shooting the edrain size would work.
