Told my FX5 is no good

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
guys im having problems with my fx5, i have nothing against it but its just not even priming itself, its not flowing after i did my water change with it what should i do

I'm not the fx5's biggest fan but his argument doesn't make sense... a glorified sponge filter?

whats funny is that this gentleman thinks he understands filtration, but really has no clue.

1. bacteria colonize the sponge quite well.

2. you want the water to be free of suspended solids when it hits the biomedia so that bacteria can freely grow on the substrate. if the substrate is clogged with dirt, the pores/surface of the biomedia is blocked and cannot be used as effieciently for colony growth.

sadly, there are people like this all the time.

they have 20 years experience etc.

but what they don't understand is that they have 1 year of misinformation, 20 times over..:screwy:

Basically, the issue is the long run 24/7 operation cost of the FX5, it uses more wattage, 50watt vs other brands who uses less wattage. In addition, there are some design flaws in the FX5, specifically the hose issue, the motor and the GPH flow of the unit..

not sure on the link but i was rolling on the floor with the description that 50 watts is a lot and that it makes for a high operation cost. maybe it's the fact that I run a pond with far larger pumps and wattages.

50w x 24 hours x 31 days is 37kw I pay 3cents a kwh. so a months cost to run the fx5 is $1.11, if you can't afford 1.11$ a month you need a new hobby.

I'd take it from that statement that you don't run a heater then for surely you would go broke with even a 100w heater.

no, because it pumps twice as much.

eg. the fluval FX5 is 50W

a Rena XP3 is half the size in terms of media capacity and flow rate but only uses aproximately half the wattage.

the FX5 is just as efficient as other brands.

it uses more wattage because it is bigger, not because it uses more power per gallon pumped...

interesting. this local fish store owner might subsribe to the idea that the slower the flow rate, the better bio filtration. another idea says the faster the flow rate, the uber awesome mech. filtraion. i think the fx5 is built to be a big mean mech. filter and just a pretty good bio filter.

thats pretty good though and is more than sufficient for most setups. plus, the fx5 has seen alot of good reviews from what i have seen here and there. i saw one in the lfs a while back. it looked awesome in the box. i would get one, but i am an eheim fan!!! otherwise, the fx5 looks good to me, though i never used one.
