I'm looking for something that could stand it's ground vs a red devil, why would I want to see them fight? By the way it's a 65 or70 gallon and of it it doesn't work out it will go in my 180 I'm now thinking of a jag what do u think about a male jd

Why are you going to stuff them into a 65, when you have a 180 available? :screwy:

Perhaps at this point it would be better to keep your RD as a single wet pet. If he/she is used to being alone it probably won't like anything that you try to add regardless of tank size. Also the older/larger he/she is the harder it will be for you to find it a mate.

As I asked before what makes you think mean + mean = possible cohabitation. Do you actually have a 180g? Why not move the RD there now?

I have owned almost all the fish people have listed. I have to say Dovii by far. My current one (see avatar) slams himself against the glass when anyone walks into my office. I have some pretty aggressive ones in my 240, but given their space their pretty chill. I think Buttikoferri are on the list, sometimes Jags, Umbees for sure. I would say in general, Dovii and Umbee and then perhaps a number of others tied for 3rd, depending on the tanks size and personality.

Because my red devil beats up my smaller cichlids and I cantput all those cichilds in a 65 gallon so I put the red devil in there my red devil is now. With a negrita catfish and they get along very well:)and the red devil is a female

60 gallon tank isnt even suitable for an RD. If you dont want a solo fish, then just get something else. Choose more peaceful smaller fish if you want a community thing. Otherwise be happy with 1 RD. DOnt be an idiot and put other fish at risk because you jsut want more fish. Get a bigger tank or get another tank if you want another mean fish.
your definitly the first person i heaar saying that a 65 to 70 gallon tank is not sutible for a red devil.:screwy:

by the way the reasn i say 65 to 70 gallon is because my tank is rounded so it gets bigger towards the middle

A fish that is equally mean probably isn't the best choice. You'd want an elusive tough fish. Try a neet or some of the smaller cave dwelling african cichlids. I had a lamprolongus tetracanthus that could hang with anything. Good looking fish with cool looking canines.

thanks ill definitly do some reasearch on that fish, but dont african cichils and american cichilds require difernt water paremeters?

Mixing new and old worlds can work but often doesn't. Water parameters have very little to with it as most old world cichlids are farm raised and have evolved to no longer need the ph levels required of their wild relatives. In my experience it has more to do with language. What I mean by that is they speak a different "fish" language. When new world cichlids have conflict they have a way of determining dominance. Once that is established it can, depending on tank size be the end of the problem. When an old world cichlid is in a conflict with a new world, often the communication between the fish is misread and leads to greater conflict down the road. In addition, some old worlds are very quick and the new worlds end up with tattered fins. In my 240 I have a Buttikoferri that does great with new worlds. So who knows if it will work. I have had a 4 inch bumblee shred a 14 inch flowerhorn. Water parameters should not be an issue so long as you have good water quality and a constant PH.
