Not sure how feasable an idea this is, but I have been contemplating getting a small tortoise or land turtle species for some time now.
I am trying to figure out how I'd do an enclosure as I have a pest of a cat that likes to jump onto things so an open-top tortoise table is not a good idea for me.
I'm thinking something around 4'L X 2'W that's say, 2-3' off the ground total. I drew up a quick sketch of what it would look like.
Any modification ideas welcome. What do you think?
bear in mind, this is a quick sketch and isn't even remotely to scale.

I dont know much about tortoises... but from the woodworking point of view it should work.
I suggest using plywood for the sides and bottom of the case, solid timber for the legs and top window. You might want to take extra care sealing the floor of the cage, in case of spilt water etc. Or maybe a plastic liner of some sort?

Other than that I cant see any reason it wont work.

Cheers

Ian

What species are you thinking of?

I would suggest one of these http://www.waterlandtubs.com/. They have both aquatic tubs and land tubs in case you decide on a water turtle. I dont know if they sell tops though. Shouldnt be too hard to make your own. Is the cat that big of a problem? I would just put it in a room the cat cant get into. I saw their booth at NARBC and I was actually impressed. And they had a cute map turtle :D

Not going with any aquatic species. The enclosure is gonna double as a functional piece of furniture if I go through with it. I was thinking a smaller tortoise species like a russian or something not too expensive.

Good Idea. If I were you I would put ventilation holes on it. Just get the little plastic Circle vents. Those should work well.

Im not a tort know it all... sorry.... But. It is good you are not gonna put glass on the side. I am sure you have read why not to.

that is a great idea. i was thinking of someting like that. but i have an iguana so it wouldn't be very functional. as far as the looks, it would look better if the sides were all clear (glass or plexiglas, being in the flooring business i can tell you first hand plexi-glass is cheaper than any "good quality" lumber)

You could build a frame around the tub to spiff it up, heck, even paint it. Again, waterland tubs makes different tubs for both aquatic and land species.

A pair ot maybe even trio of Russians would do great in a tub or something of similar size. In fact, the Waterland booth at NARBC had a trio of Russians in their land setup.

She wants to know about a coffee table type ting, Loco. Stop pushin so hard on the water tub thing, you suggested it, leave it at that ;) She did start the thread ALREADY with the idea of the coffee table.

Btw It sounds like a great idea hun, aslong as it has enough space, and only the top is glass :)
