Total Beginner help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i really want a small cichlid though, would appistogramma be viable?
Not for a beginner I wouldn't recommend them. They need pretty advanced care for pong term success.

Kribensis are probably best, even if from Asia

Hello; Forgive me if I am confusing this thread with another. I thought we were discussing what would be a hardy fish to have in a new setup for a beginning fish keeper??

The thread seems to have moved toward types of fish that are indeed interesting, but not exactly hardy starter fish. To use an analogy this may be like trying to run when you are still at the crawl stage.

I have been at the hobby for over 50 years and would hesitate trying some of the fish recently named. appistogramma for one.

I have tried various species with only short term success in some cases. What I seem to have done over the decades is keep the sort of fish that are better suited for my water. I do not try to change pH for example.

I am not absolutely sure about this but it is my guess that the less expensive fish in a fish shop may be among the more hardy and the more tolerant of a wide range of water parameters or perhaps the more easy to tank raise.

Get some of the other fish later on.

Good luck

The honest truth is that with only a 46G bowfront + the fact you want some interesting oddballs means you will be rather limited in choices...

Throw in the fact you are reasonably new to the hobby, chances are things will go wrong and you may end up with some costly mistakes...

But anyway, with such a small tank and it being new, im not sure i would go with 2 bristlenose plecos, in fact, i would personally skip plecos all together, since till you've owned one, you have no idea just how big a crap factory they can really be...

I meant from Africa

Ahh, to poop or not to poop.

I will not deny that plecos are famous poop machines but for me the last 10-20 years it seem my plecos have been poopless(meaning I haven't seen any poop from them). It could be from a few factors. 1) a good filter 2) I only feed every few days 3) Maybe there is a fish eating it.

Even if Bristlenose do poop alot, I think one would be ok in a 45. As long as a gravel vac is used when doing water changes.
