Trade-In for Store Credit

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there is a markup on everything in a LFS. the store i work at gives about wholesale for fish we think we'll sell (and sell it fast) to most people. Mostly its an opinion on the part of the employee taking the trade in. We have limited space and that amounts to a 40 long for angels gouramis and medium barbs. Another 40 long for convicts, small/med oscars and misc medium fish a third 40 long for bigger oscars or aggressive preds like piranha or occasionally really nice lookers the main tank is a 120 for big oscars and the like. In the last week we've gotten in a 16 inch channel cat, a 15 inch sailfin pim, four five inch tinfoil barbs, one six inch oscar, one adult jack dempsey, two very large T barbs and three silver dollars. that tank takes daily water changes and good feedings but it turns over reasonably fast most times. I get a lot of trade ins, i snagged the hottest one i've ever seen about two weeks ago and i'll post some pics of it soon.

the best looking africans go in a display tank for display prices.

most people just trade large for small and start the process over.

I dont trade many fish in but to each their own, i try to find homes with hobbyist since i cant control where they go after i take them to the store.

personally trade ins seem hardier than the shipped in stressed out fish that we get in regularly, that could just be biased by the numbers of trade ins a see compared to stressed out pissed off shipped fish.

we refuse a lot of trade ins for lack of space or having too damn many (how many 12 inch oscars do you need at once anyway).

personally i've been waiting for more red hooks to show up i got five trade ins last year that i love (they are occasionally spastically hyper but over all not too bad). i dont want to pay for silver dollar sized fish mine would laugh at them. :).

unfortunately the lfs closest to me (the one I go to most) tries to horde any nice trade ins they can get.If I ask how much they want for it they usually snap "its not for sale, its going to be a display fish!" :screwy:

Later I come into the store and the "display fish" is gone.I ask where it is and am always met with the same response "oh I had some guy that kept asking for it so I sold it.":irked:

Now if somebody tells me something is not for sale then out of respect I dont push the subject, and being put into a position where I have to get on the LFS owners nerves by being a whiny sniveling **** or else not get the good deals really ticks me off.

so theres my rant on the trade in situation with my LFS.thanks for letting me get that out. ;)

that is when you need to realize its time and worth the effort to driv ea bit further to next closest reasonable shop. and if mad enough about it...tell em before you leave..fine, I'll be taking my business, and everyone I know, along with the forums over to blah blah blah instead...

Same in UK, your lucky if they will take ANY fish (big or not) off your hands for free

Ok guys, go onto TFDfish.com and look at their price list. Now look at what you pay in the store. See the mark up? Ok, now take that percentage and multiply it by what you think your fish is worth. That is what you fish is worth when s LFS offers to take a trade in. To them, they are buying a fish to make a profit, so they aren't going to give you full or even half price on a monster because they will lose money.

Why would they buy fish from a customer for more than they can get it for elsewhere? It's business, as Radley pointed out. Recognize that running a successful fish store is a tough. Fish don't make money for Petco, dog food does.

Good point Ewurm. Ask any place that sells fish and dog food. Dog food is a much bigger seller.
