To OP, your friend should ask the company for compensation. This is really no joke. What if the water fail to extinguish the fire and burn his whole house down. I say demand a 180g from the company. That is what they owe you.

I agree with this completely, I'd ask for a 180g tank and something towards the cost of the fish. Most companies would do this out of goodwill plus I'm sure there's some legal thing they'd want to avoid.

Anyone have a link to pictures of the exact models being recalled? I've seen this come up before but still cannot confirm that the ones I own are the ones being recalled.

Yeah, I'm running plenty of those. Will pet stores exchange them all on the same-day or do I have to play musical heaters and do them one by one?

A terrible situation I really feel for you ,but had the tank bottom not gone and extinguished the fire it could have been the whole lot worse.
At the very least I would be expecting the company to replace all the equipment that was lost due to the failure of there product.Really hope this get sorted for you.

Polys are possibly one of the hardiest freshwater fish, I won't be surprise if they made it.

Come on, you got to be somewhat surprised. They survived a FIRE and broken glass everywhere! :D :nilly:

Hope the company compensates you.

thanks for support guys. i am guessing that the controller malfunctioned and the heater went into overdrive. it evaporated the sump and started fire. i was using blue line heater and controller. i would have caught that, but i was not home for a couple of days. the bichirs were actually in a different tank. the only survivor was my giant salamander (siren). not sure how she survived fire and being on the floor for god knows how long. but i took to local pet store to be rehomed. yes, my house smells like smoke now. it is kind of weird that it happened now, because i was in a process of selling all my fish due to my anticipated move to ukraine.
i am not sure if i am going to sue the company or not. i really dont have time and i am in cleveland for work most of the week. i might just send them the controller and see what happens. in any case, i wont be setting any more tanks until i get to kiev.

Vitaly, if you were staying closer to me.
I would treat you to a beer buffet. All-you-can-drink
