Transfering RTG to New 180g Tank.

My 2 cents...

I would scratch the idea of cleaning any parts of your filters in tapwater for the time being. You need all the bio you can get from the sound of things.

Bderick67 is right about getting your 75/aro stable. No need to worry about messing with the 180 becuase your 75 is actually cycling now. Once the tank has cycled and the bacteria have established themselves on the media, then you can do just like Bderick67 said and swap tanks.

You would drain all water from the 75 into 180. Move the aro over to the 180 with its old water. Continue on filling the tank with fresh treated water, and it will be no worse for your aro than a regular large water change. Move your filters and equipment over and your done. (always a good idea to test new equipment before firing them up in a new tank with fish, ex. heaters filters so on)

If you have an established filter... you have an established tank.

All makes perfect sense to follow here... Tonight when i came home i did a water test and then a WC then a water test again after the wc and these were the results:

TEST / Before WC / After WC

PH / 7.6 / 7.6
PH high / 7.8 / 7.8
Ammonia / 0.25 / less than 0.25
Nitrite / 0 / 0
Nitrate / 10ppm / less than 10ppm

I think these results show that there isn't enough working bacteria in the filters converting waste. In the mean time I think I'll just keep changing waters every 2 or 3 days... or maybe even everyday if needed when i find the ammonia high. Also i'll stop feeding for now maybe 1 worm once in a while few days maybe.

My question is does anyone have any idea how long it would take the filters to be populated with bacteria? weeks? months? What else should I do in the mean time?

It could take a couple weeks or a couple months, some times its hard to say. With you doing water changes it mite take a little longer. Best case scenario for a "cycle" to complete, is the tank doesn't get any water changes. But since your aro is in the tank, no water changes is really out of the question. I think you'd better keep doing them.

Just keep testing the water. Once you see nitrite readings, you know your bacteria is starting to work (breaking down amonia). After you have a nitrite spike, the nitrates should begin to show up in your test results. When this starts happening you will notice a big reduction in your amonia and nitrites. Thus the cycle is complete...

(this explanation is just how a typical cycle will go, and yours should go like this, but I can guarantee nothing. There are always different variables that are unknown and in play)

Do you have any other established aquariums at home? Do you have any friends in your area with large running tanks? Possibly one with multiple filters?

I always run a couple filters on all my tanks. If I ever run into a problem with water quality (if I think my filters may have been shocked and are not working properly) I move an extra established filter to the tank in need.

1- it helps regain the proper water quality

2- might help seed your other filters with good bacteria (can't say for sure but it couldn't hurt)

There is the tank at work 90g and there is the AC110 running on it. I mean I can take some of the sponge from that ac110. The tank has 9 koi fish and has been running for years.

Should I cut of a piece maybe 2x2 inch sponge? Cube and throw that into my ac110?

Or I have spare ac110 sponges so maybe I can take the new sponges and put them in the ac110 koi tank at work. And then bring it back to my 75g to seed.
But how long can the new sponge be seeded?? Like how long should I leave the new sponge in the filter at work?

Before you do anything, are the koi in good shape? Been healthy for a while? Becuase if they have "something" your fish also has the chance of getting it aswell. Something to think about.

Is that the only filter on the koi tank? And what is in that filter? If it has the bio rings and a sponge, I would just swap your new sponge for the old dirty one at your work. Be sure to keep the sponge wet on the way home so you don't kill off any of the bacteria (put it in a bag with some water or something).

I would say 2 weeks... give or take a couple days

I just bought a small bottle of bacteria water rated for a 20g and place half and half in both ac110s to speed up the process. Iwill do a param test later tonight to see what the results are. This way I don't mess up the filter at work =)
