I think one big thing you need to know is when "cleaning" bio media is you're simple rinsing or squeezing the gunk out of the media versus actually getting it sparking clean. As mentioned above, cleaning the filter media in the old tank water that you took out during a water change will help lessen the loss of bacteria because the tank water has no chlorines.

Side note: the more bio media you have the more stable your tank will be!

good luck!

Thank you! =)

OH man... I had no idea i was killing the bacteria i thought they were hardy SOB's in the sponges... So the Bio media's are in and I have copied and pasted your notes above, Gonna start doing that instead of what i did before.

I think i'm going to keep my RTG in my 75g for a couple of weeks and get my new 180g tank cycled before i put my RTG in the new tank. BUT is 2 weeks enough? What I'm planning to do is put 1 of the AC110's onto the 180g for 2 weeks to run and cycle and keep 1 AC110 on my 75g to keep my RTg alive with WC's every 3 days to help out. Would 2 week be enough for 1 AC110 to cycle my new 180g??

Yes this can work, but its risky. You seem still new to how this bio thing works, but with proper caution it can be done. There is always room for error, you just have to know your making an error lol!! When you do move the ac110 to the 180 and only have one on your 75 you need to CUT DOWN FEEDING. Maybe feed once every two days, or less. That way your single filter on the 75 can grow bacteria accordingly without your tank exploding again. Bio will only grow as much as needed. So say if you have your two ac110s and you take one off, your missing bio. Even though one ac110 can properly take care of the 75 not all your bio media is being used, well because it doesn't have to be. Thats why you need to go slow, and really understand bio media, because it eats and grows. Big feedings, and unstable feedings really upset the bacteria. Get a routine going man, and you'll have it down.

Hey man it takes time to grasb this whole bio media thing. I still learn something new about bio media every day. While it is hardy, tap water kills instantly. Good thing your here and learning man! You have a nice fish, and make sure you keep researching bio media and how it works.

Also it could be faster than 2 weeks for a cycle on the 180. You should know by your test results. Read up on the cycle a little more. I also recomend getting a canister filter for the 180, but the ac110s will work. I just personally like the clean look of a canister hidden below. Also a liquid test kit is a must.

Cliff, you invested in a 180 and have a great fish...buy a great filtration system to compliment it. Spend the bucks on an FX or Eheim. They're worth it.

I agree, you have a nice fish and setup. I would ebay a fx5, then you would have some real power filtration, and its easier to clean/understand bio.

ok I'll cut down on feeding etc and do WC's while setting up the new 180. yah I know that Ammonia gets broken down to Nitrites and then Nitrates and nitrates need to be taken out by WC's. I'm still learning a lot everyday here and at the LFS and sometimes its trying to connect what everyone says and from what I read as well... it seems that everyone has their own way or opinion on whats good and right. It can get confusing for me sometimes cause what I read, talk about at LFS and from here MFK. All this makes sense here so I'll do what you suggested above. =) thanks for help.

The 180g Tank does come with 2x Fluval 404's. But the thing is the owner left water sitting inside those filters for over 8 months!!!! :WHOA: the water must smell really really bad and a BIG clean up needs to be done in those before they can be used. So I htink with the 2x AC110's and 2x Fluval 404(maybe even just 1 Fluval404) would be good enough for pristine water quality for a 180g.

ALSO once I leave my 180g cycled for 2 weeks do u think I can put the RTG in once the TEST results come back with Ammonia 0, PH 7.6, Nitrites 0 and Nitrates under or ~20??

ALSO a coworker wants to give me a 2inch FLAGTAIL for my new tank as a present. Do you think a 2inch Flagtail would be ok to grow out with my 11inch RTG right now?

one more thing Cliff, clean ONE filter at a time, not both.

a reading on "aquarium nitrogen cycle" would help...

Do u mean to clean only 1filter per wc? Or 1filter at a time leaving 1 filter in the tank during 1 wc???

You shouldnt have to clean your filters every water change. If you do, then that basically means you lack a TON of filtration. You have to establish your cycle, like said before. I dont see how your 180 will be able to cycle in 2 weeks unless you have half the media already mature, which in your case, seems not to be since you clean the media thoroughly each time. Might be a better idea to go the full month like normal instead. You can rinse out the sponges in tap water, but never do that to your bacterial surfaces. Take a bucket of tank water when you do a water change and rinse your media in that. Tap water is instant death to your bacteria.

Way to many people giving different directions of advice here. Realize the biomax added has no bacteria in it right now and is doing nothing. Taking one of the AC110s from the 75g will only put the 75g in worse shape then it already is.

Personally I would get the 75g with the aro in it stabilized with both AC110s on the 75g. Once your 75g is good, you can then just transfer all the water, both filters and the arowana to the 180g then fill the 180g the rest of the way with ph and temp similar water. This is very simple, you do not need any other filters at this time. But also realize you should not be adding anymore fish into the mix either.

PM if ya have any questions, this thread is turning into to much of a circus.

I agree.
