i agree. disassemble the tank and construct your tank after that, cutting and glue-ing when necessary.

So your cutting the top something like this?????

I recommend cutting the center wall & leaving an inch at the sides & bottom.. you can use the remaining material to attach things to...

I think that the advice has been given. If you think that it'll work then do it. I'm the king of spending two bucks trying to save one, so I can see where your head's at. The reality of the matter is that it's not a fish tank it's a display case. After you buy more material, laminate the tank, fill the holes, cut out the divider, etc, etc....you still have a display case.

I vote for the cut it up and build things idea. A few smaller projects will better your experience for that future MONSTER tank one day.

First off thanks for everyones feedback....

That is exactly what I plan to do.... with me also placing a side piece on the end of the container.......,and yes I did plan on leaving about an inch of acrylic a the top and bottom when removing the center piece....., the bottom would be covered by sand and the top you wouldnt see because the water level would not get that high...

So I know that ive said this a few times..., but i definetly have read in many places including the DIY stickies in this forum that 3/8" acrylic is fine for acrylic aquariums up to 18" tall. So why does everybody keep saying that it needs to be 1/2" acrylic????? am i missing something..., are people just concerned about the width of the proposed aquarium???

If the consensus is that it needs to be 1/2" acrylic then laminating all sides with 1/8" acrylic would be an option right??? I really dont find that process to be that difficult.... does anyone??

I really dont have any other intentions for this aquarium other than for it to become a small ray tank or possibly a sump..... so I will probably do this or build another tank out of acrylic that will be much larger. It still would be nice to have this tank and a larger one in the future..... Just cant seem to bring myself to scrap this 7-8 hundered dollar piece of acrylic....

So whats everybody think now that it seems like everybody understands the layout of this proposed aquarium....???

I dont expect this tank to be a beautiful one but just a funtional one to house rays that need a little more surface area until a bigger tank is a financial option.... like I said I cant see that much acrylic going to waste...

plus how is a display tank much differnet than a aquarium which displays fish..... If anything all the joints are professionally done compared to me performing all of the remodeling and construction/bonding.

Im not trying to put ya down..., im just bringing up a valid point, can ya kind of see what im getting at though.......

I looked through your acrylic repair tread...., and I give you props for such a great job....., based upon what you know about my project, do you think it is do-able???

Not to toot my on horn..., but i consider myself rather handy and able....

I think you may be misunderstanding me...., probably my fault...., the widest wall would the other sides......, it will be the sides with the small wholes in it and they will only be 18" tall...... when i remove that middle piece...., it will only be diconnecting the bond between the top and bottom of the proposed aquarium......., is everybody worried about the joints failing or the panels themselves. isnt 3/8" good up to 18" aquarium heights...???

Im just thinkin... if its just for rays and nothing else wouldnt it be fine to just put like 10" of water in it?
I think it would definitly hold that amount of water...

does anyone have any spare 3/8" cell cast acrylic in the philadelphia area? approx. 34" x 19". Will pay......, just dont want to buy a full sheet if I dont have too......
