Treating velvet

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Any reason why ? Too much crap in the soup kind of thing ?

IMHO everything that we add to a freshwater system is at some level, stressful to the fish. Including salt, and including raising temp levels. Some species much more than others. I'm fine with people raising temps and adding salt, but not when meds are in the water. Cupramine works, Mardel Coppersafe works well too, both are very effective at eradicating ectoparasites without any additional help. I just think that when giving general advice, it's the safest way to go.

More dissolved things in the water and higher temperature results in less "space' for oxygen in the water. If I can help it, I generally don't raise the temperature when medicating.

Good point. My 1st choice would have been mardel but it wouldnt have arrived until next week.

Gotcha makes perfect sense.

I dosed for 350 gal. (16 drops)

According to the directions we are aiming for .25 mg/L (fresh water) figure i'll let.it circulate for a bit then run a test amd adjust if need be.

So im pretty sure this is patient 0. He went from qt to the main tank. Was doing great in qt except there was allot of bickering between the small aros.

After a day or 2 in the 300. it stopped eating and progressively got worse. Something was stressing it so i put it in a bin. Thats when i noticed one of the other fish looking like it potentially had velvet.

If you watch closely at the 30 secondish mark you can see the white on the its head and body.

Dilemma is this fish was also in the qt with a small dat, 2 albino aros and a couple of other fish. Im reluctant to treat this tank with the cupramine. Worried about those little albino aros.

Thoughts ? No one is showing any symptoms and are all eating like champs

Wait and don’t treat the aro. Other than some tattered fins not much.

I have no idea how i would even tell if they became infected.

You won’t until they start acting sick and then get covered in a sandy dust covering.
