add a water fall the taller the better cooling it will offer. also build it so no matter what time of day it is it that a small portion of the deep end is in the shade constantly. and as for cheap filtration run a giant diy wet-dry. make it using a plastic 55 gallon drum and use pvc shavings for media they sell it at home depot and lowes, but you might be able to talk them into giving it to you free. just wash it good. and keep the filter in the shade(maybe even in a shed to hide it. if you run the piping under ground that will also aid in cooling (and keeping it warm in winter if you run them from the deep end 4-5 fet under ground. also the deeper you make the pond the more stable the temps will be.

there is an asian guy named kenny that works at the ocean floor(hate the store but kenny is a great guy with some crazy connections over in asia) and he is the fresh water god. he has a pond here in arizona and he keep and breed arowana's in his pond:eek: so talk to him and Im sure he'll point you in the right direction and listen to every single thing he tells you he knows his ****;)

thanks for the info,

i've dealt with kenny at ocean floor (i too hate that store) they got some florida gars in (shame on them for doing that) so i asked him about them, and he was like you know the florida gar?, i was like yeah, he said, well those are these.:)

i also was like, how long have you guys had them, he said a week. which was false, they didnt have any two days before that day when i came just to look around.:irked::)

maybe you missed them or he just lost track of when he got them. I work at an LFS and it is very hard to keep track of which animals come in when there are just so many and the come and go too fast to keep track of everything.

seriously listen to him, ask him about making a pond and listen to what he says(listen carefuly sometimes its hard to hear through his accent) and get to know him good, he's got some crazy hookups in asia and if you become good friends he might even pass his savings on to you. I dont know him that well but I do know that he can answer any and every question you have pertaining to succesfully keeping a exotic pond in az

thanks, i'm in accel algebra/geo so i already figured that out :D

thanks for the info.:D

Algebra and geometry at the same time? Interesting...

Keep it shaded and keep it deep, both of these things will cool it. Also, a waterfall will cool it substantially.

For the filter, hit up zennzzo here on mfk for some scrubbies and get yourself 4 55g barrels. Dr.Joe said (in another thread) to check restaurant supply places and car washes for them. These can be used in series or parallel.

The deeper the better (at least 5') and I would run a makeshift heat exchanger that has coils of tubing buried deep in the ground. Have water pump through these coils. The ground always stays cool at depth. Otherwise you're going to be too hot in summer and too cold in winter! How are you going to heat it in winter?

Lowest it usually gets in the winter in Tucson, AZ is about 40 degrees at night. Is that too cold for a tropical without spending mega $$$ on heating?
