trouble breeding convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i dont know if anyone covered this already because im too lazy to keep reading but 74 is awful cold to breed cons. id say 80-82 would help the possibility of breeding

eave em the parents are great at caring for he fry.. unless u see more eggs meaning they spawned again than remove them or they will be killed

I ended up getting 2 males and 3 females convicts in my 20 gallon. The 1 male is chasing and beating the crap out of the other male. The dominant male is raising his dorsal fins with every female in the tank. The females are all about 2-3 months old. Are they even old enough to breed? The male are about 5 months old.

Here Ill cover some issues

1. temp, mine will only breed at 79-81
2. Only breed if I change the scape around a bit
3. I take the fry out once they free swim. The reason for this is 1. With the fry in the tank i have noticed the male eat them when he wants to breed again, causing the female to hurt him badly. 2. When she is ready to breed and his time has passed and is now protecting the fry, he will then try to kill her.
4. Just add water haha had to add that in.
5. Instead of buying alot of cons and tossing them in, i bought the male i liked and the female, watched how they acted then introduced a new female in a week later. I've done this 2x now and each time he picked the female he wanted and I had eggs 2 days later.
6. They are great parents or PARENT, but as a pair it's alot of work since they like to breed so much, so like i said, get ready to yank them out, they will have fry so often you will start to re-think this choice of fish.

Hope this all helps.
