Trying to cut down on electric bill

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I also agree with this, on my need to be, warmest tanks, I use 2" styrofoam insulation.

And I consider temps in the 80sF excessive, unless you are keeping warm/hot water species such as Nandopsis haitiensis, discus or Alcolapia sp. to name a few. Most tropical will do very well in the mid 70s and perhaps have less bacterial and fungal infections.
Lids on your tank and insulating non-viewing panels will help reduce your electric bill.

keep natives, no heat required.

That's a good one....What are you keeping btw?...Also,look around for any other needless wastes of electricity...turn off any lights or appliances that are not needed.

Looking for advice on how to heat multiple tanks as the electric bill is getting high with conventional heaters. I run 2 heaters in each tank so if there is an issue with 1 the tank won't freeze or cook, is this contributing to the high electric use. I would think it is easier to maintain temp with 2 heaters not working as hard and using less electricity or am I wrong.

I found this App very useful for running cost and seeing how much insulation can save you.

Anybody want to buy a fish sweater? LOL! Most aquariums are kept at higher temperatures than most fish need. Turning the heaters down a few degrees won't hurt most fish. Just make sure the temperature doesn't constantly fluctuate.
