Swimmin' with the fishes
So I've got a heavily planted 300g polypterus tank (build thread) currently and I'm wanting to add an eel to it because the wife loves eels. Our current local options are a ~14" M. dayi, a 8" M. ellipsifer and/or a 8" M. moorii. All the polys are 8-11" and will not get much bigger than a foot max. There's tons of hides and dark corners that any eel would love. There's also a bunch of snails that I wouldn't want to have eaten.

I know from past experience the dayi can be pretty aggressive and territorial, but I don't know if that was just ours or if it's a common trait. In terms of looks, we're leaning toward the moorii.

So taking all that in to account, what is everyone's experiences with these eels in a community type tank? We don't want to throw off the current happy non-aggressive balance.

my 14" dayi is only aggressive with my fire eels but will fight my bichirs for their worms

aggression during feeding is fine. the bichirs almost tore each others fins off last night for some tilapia. it's their first time ever having it so they kinda went nuts. lol no one got hurt though, so I can't imagine an eel of any kind breaking through their armor.

what do you think about possibly adding a moorii and a dayi? or moorii and ellipsifer?

I would probably do the moorii and ellipsifer since they are the same size so bullying won't be as bad the only problem is getting smaller ones to eat. Btw where are you that you have all 3 available?

I've never had a problem getting eels to eat. A mix of mysis, brine, bloodworms, and earthworms always gets them going as I transition them to pellets. If they don't take pellets right off the bat.

New England. I'd have to travel 1.5hrs to boston to get the moorii and ellipsifer, but it'd be worth it in my book. I'd probably pick up a palmas palmas and buettikoferi while I was down there too.

I'd be happy if I can get my eels on Tilapia like my bichirs it's so much cheaper than the 9-10 nightcrawlers they eat daily
