Trying to do it right..?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1st welcome. Now onto why multiple species with only one of each. The main reason is the fish keepers desire to own the different types. Bichirs tend to do well with any bichir they can't eat

Thank you! That makes sense, yes. I had been wondering if it was that or if there was some other reason.

Welcome! Are you 100% sure it's a male? Those are pretty rare! :)

Get a 90 with mpre polys then keep the angels with extra cories in the 60. That's my idea.

Hope it all works out! :D

Thanks! From all the comparison pics I've seen, yup! The anal fin on mine is very thick and fleshy/muscular and rounded. I don't think my camera is good enough to give you a close up, even if he'd stay still long enough, alas.

I reeeeeaaally like that idea. Tanks are like potato chips, anyway. :p

Senegal specie are the top 3 compatible bichir towards other fish. The predatorial instincts decrease significantly if tankmates are twice the size of their mouth. Post pics when you're able. A little size chart for the UJ species.

- Upper Jaw Polypterus -

* Small (most under 12")
** Medium (12"-14")
*** large (15"+)

* Senegal
* Gold Dust
* Retropinnis
* Moke
* Palmas

** Polli
** Delhezi

*** Ornate
*** Weeksii
*** Teugelsi

So this is the tank. I used different filters/settings/whatever on my camera, and these two came out the best. The first pic has one of the female angels (Freya) in the front and the second has the male (Merlin). Athena, the other female angel was still hiding when I took these pics. The cory (Master Jim Hawkins, aka "Jimmy") was in the back and the bichir (Don Quixote, aka "Donny") was bubble surfing like a maniac and wouldn't sit still.

Vancouver_98683, Thanks for the chart! But, dang, that poor albino cory! I work at a LFS and I always tell customers my story of a little teeny Senegal swimming around with a Bala in it's mouth like a dog with a bone. Sometimes it helps them realize they shouldn't buy the bichir for their 10 gallon, and sometimes they take more convincing :rolleyes:.

I don't know how uncommon it is, both my albino and regular are male. I think 2 things 1 they tend to be much smaller then some other polys so the anal fin looks more umm.....feminine. 2 it may take a bit for them to mature, I thought they were both female until just recently after I'd had them over 2 years. Compared to my dels they were late bloomers, they started flexing the man fin at about a year. It will be interesting to see if my Polli is male or female right now I'd say female along with at least 1 butt and possibly both teugs. But I think they all mature at different rates.

Another interesting thing my sen knew immediately that the big del I put in was female and started courting right away. Both del males haven't really tried anything yet and she ignored the sen. So maybe the dels all 3 aren't fully mature yet? Or they just aren't ready to be parents/saving themselves for marriage? Lol
magpie magpie how old do you think Udon is?
Sorry for the side jaunt. Cyanopica Cyanopica

Welcome to the site. I think your plans will work out fine. The 90 would make an excellent angel fish and upper jaw tank.

How big is your senegalus now and how long did you and your friend have him for ?

Id be weary of the cory in with poly long term
