TSN in 180?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my tsn is in a 120 and it is to small for him to turn around in at 17 inches in a 16 inch deap tank so yah stick to lima please and thanks

The 180 is 6 x 2 x 2 so a 17" tsn could turn around no problem. Also what are the dems of ur 120 cuz the only ones I know are 4' x 2' x 2'. Which a 17" fish could turn around in.

Pseudoplatystoma metaense and Pseudoplatystoma orinocoense are the only ones I know of that stay under 2' SL (not TL). The rest of TSNs are over 40". I have no experience with stunting fish. Don't know if it is possible for a hobbyist. I'd not do it as I consider this cruelty. You don't have to agree.

Well I'm not saying anything on the matter of stunting. I just know some fish will not get as big. For example
I know that it is possible to keep a pacu in a 75 because it will stunt to around 16. Obviously I'm going to get flamed for this but you can't deny that it does happen. I just want to know if it is actually bad for the fish. Does it just stay small, is its spine compressed or does its spine fold over its self? Because if it just stays small then I don't see the harm but I do for the other obvious reasons.

Well, you have more knowledge about the stunting than I do. Maybe an expert will weigh in who knows whether or not stunting causes physical suffering to the fish. But as you hinted yourself, in order to stunt the fish it has to be kept in what vast majority would call an inhumane and cruel conditions. It is not unlike buying a Mastino neapolitano and keeping it in a powder room hoping it stays at a poodle size or getting a Clydesdale and keeping it in a bedroom hoping it stays a pony size because neither can move too much. Please, do not read emotion in my reply - this is just reason and observation talking. I would not dare to judge anyone.

Yeah I understand. I was jw cuz people say tsn will grow 2' Ina 180 because they stunt. And even if they stunt to 2' in a 180 with no damage or pain to the fish, I think it's
Not so bad provided amazing filtration and enough decorations for the tsn to hide but also turn around. I've always heard the rule of thumb for most catfish is L(2.5x length of fish) x W(just as wide as catfish is long). But I'm no expert on monsters so I'm Not sure. I've never kept a fish larger than 14".
