Lots of people were evacuated in the early morning hours. There were a lot of cars parked along the road when I went to work--apparently moving to "higher ground".

We're absolutely in a safe area. When I mentioned "impacted", I was referring to another aspect of the tsunami warning. Schools were closed today, and about 3/4s of our staff did not show up to work, either because they had child care problems, or there were road closures that did not allow them to drive to work. The low lying part of Crescent City (the part that was destroyed in the 1964 tsunami) was evacuated, and is still blocked off. Can't get to the bank or the post office...in fact the postal workers who managed to get to work were sent home as the post office is in the tsunami zone. There is major damage to our harbor with quite a few boats sunk or destroyed. The harbor in Brookings, OR is also badly damaged.

The big tsunami that hit Crescent City after the big Alaska earthquake is always on people's minds around here. It's something that has to be taken seriously.

With minimal staff, and everyone at work on emergency standby notice, it was a minimum day for me...so I was definitely impacted by the tsunami warning. I was not unhappy to start my weekend a little earlier than usual:)
wow that is some video.. i don't remember that at all.. how many victims ... sad to see it all... i feel relieved now that it did not impact california.. and the other states on the coast too bad... the videos of the water coming up over the buildings and cars etc in japan was heartbreaking to see.. i am glad to hear you are fine..

I wonder if there is something about the topography of the sea-floor and/or coastline that magnifies or focuses the tidal surge in this region. It seems more than coincidental that your town has been hit twice so badly.

It is terrible that this has happened to your town, but at least nobody was killed. Boats and docks can be replaced. Good luck.

From the Slate article:
"Why is Crescent City so vulnerable to tsunamis? Apparently the main culprit is the Mendocino Fracture Zone, an underwater elevation extending westward that guides tsunamis into deeper water, where they pick up speed as they approach the mainland. The West Coast's topography around Crescent City curves inland, which intensifies a tsunami's effect, and the shoreline of Crescent City itself is (as the name suggests) a curve within that curve."

Yep, we've got tsunami warning sirens, etc., which are tested on a regular basis.

Only person lost was someone swept out to sea as he was trying to get pictures of the waves. When I started this thread, I was in no way trying to take way from the horrific, catastrophic devastation that occurred in Japan--I was merely wondering how my day was going to be affected. It turns out that every one in our community was affected in one way or another. Things like hospital dental services were cancelled as the hospital was on emergency standby. There was only one grocery store open, as the other three were in the evacuated zone. No postal services, no banking, schools all closed--every person was affected.

Our economically depressed area was dealt a major blow with the destruction of the harbor. After the prison industry, fishing is the next biggest industry here. I just watched footage of our harbor which usually is packed with rows and rows of fishing boats tied side by side. Even at low tide, the tidal surges did tremendous damage.

Yesterday was just a weird day around here with not a lot of work being done, and everyone standing by listening to the local radio for updates on what was happening. This area has a lot of seismic activity, here and offshore. Can't help but wonder when the next "BIG" one will happen here. There is nothing to prevent a similar 1964 type event from happening again in our area. Tsunamis are always a possibility here, and we have reminders everywhere. Even the bowling alley is called Tsunami Lanes.

stay safe! hope ur ok
