turning a 125 into a sump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats another one I ran across but I still cant find the information that steered me away from scrubbies and to Poret foam. With a sump the size he is making I am not sure he can make the wrong decision. One of the benefits to Poret foam is that every 6mo or so, you remove it and do a quick clean by rinsing it out with tank water or banging it on the sidewalk and put it back in. No fuss no muss!

Ross has a point. There are a few substances that are better at harboring bacteria than scrubbies, but there is a point where enough is enough. Just get something that is cheap and effective.

wow those are two good reads. thank you very much. so im guessing in the wetdry part it will be bioballs and scrubbies then i will have to add another spot for the foam and all my ceramics. and pharoah how much room would you suggest for the sock?about 18"?

I guess that depends on what size sock you are getting, but just make sure that is it wide enough for the sock to fit completely into the chamber. You will want to have ample room to mess with it when changing them out.

Biggest I've seen is 8 1/4".

so the first chamber for the sock will be 12"x18"? does that sound good? not sure on how high yet but will prolly do measurements tonight and buy the measured glass tomorrow. ross i think im going to be going with your design maybe as i like it but after doing measurements and seeing what i want that might change. also for the drip plate they didnt have plastic peg board so i bought an 18"x24" acrylic. im going to drill holes in it. how big would be a good size and what measurements between holes?

On the drip plate, I used 1/4" holes on mine I think. A piece of pegboard makes and excellent template for drilling the holes. Place a piece of pegboard the same size as your acrylic over your acrylic and drill out the 4 corners. But a nut/bolt in each corner to hold the pegboard in place and start drilling out the remaining holes. As far as your design, you might want to get your filter socks on hand so you can decide just how big you need that area to be.
