Ugh, we need fresh ray topics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have two rays in 300 gal tank, 1 male pearl and 1 female marble motoro, she is 2 years old and just mated, the pearl is around 4 years now.

My pearl was a new pup when I got her and tiny compared to the pearl, she is now bigger than him and they are both between 13 and 15 inches and growing all the time.....will need a bigger tank very soon and maybe pups on the way!

Yes we do need some better topics. one I would like to see is a genetics topic with actual facts from dna studies

Calgary has a good one, Ampullae of lorenzini and its uses in potamotrygon/paratrygon

I'm prolly $50/week. Less if I make gel food. Average prolly 2 lbs/day.

I only have like 5 rays that are over a foot (all females). 17 are Marbles and most are the smaller ones.

So you're the Marbled hoarder! Sell me some!

looks like a cross between a dark morph pearl and a regular motoro..
personally...i think its pretty badass.

Yeah he is pretty pimp but the only downfall is he is a ugly brown ray and not a precious black one so if I ever got rid of him I would probably have to pay someone a couple hundred bucks and drive across country to drop him off.

Ive been kinda nervis about asking this but I have a retic in with my AGTF. Ive had them in the same tank since I got both of them. everything I look up online just dosent give me any info im looking for and alot of people like to over exaggerate on the tiger saying they will kill anything I have in with him. have you ever herd of anyone haveing a problem with tigers and rays? I allso have 2 c. gibbis and a ralf cat in the tank as well. I have never seen him showing the ray any aggression and the ray is around him all of the time and the only fish he shows any aggression tords is the one gibbis IDK why But what do you think. I would love to get more rays what do you think?

Most combos are experimental when it comes to rays. I have kept dats, gars, red bay snook, pbass, and now discus with mine. I had a 9 inch ray attack and kill a 5" discus and eat it's eyes out. Of all the fish I have had the discus I felt would be the best suited not to get eaten. So all I can say is good luck and watch River Monsters so you can see what your GATF will turn into. I would be more worried about my hand at that size.

Ok thanks, I was thinking if I have them grow up together and that would increase chanses. But he seems ok and they both eat good so ill just watch and be ready if he starts showing any aggression. and Iknow I love rivermonsters. Im looking at making a really large tank/pond or maybe getting one of those pbc and rubber pools that are like 2,000g and pump the sh*t out of it with pool filters or something hah

that's still pretty impressive db.. please don't downplay what you have.. because that's an insult to us... I mean I'm still trying to get over the fact that envy a guy that I don't really care 4...

The part I'm proudest of is the fact that NO tank at my house is a typical tank. I buy a used acrylic tank and then the work begins. Small tanks will flow 5K gph and big tanks are set up for up to 10K GPH. Every system has a "buffer" tank to increase overall water volume. I built all the filtration myself. Has been 5 years of trial and error, and I still can't build flaw free filtration. I incorporate submerged, wet/dry and moving bed bio media on my big tank, and used enough of each to support the rays if I was to remove 2/3 bio sources. The moving bed filter on the big tank will process almost 3 times the weight of thier current meals, and that's just the reactor with no help from the scrubbie wet/dry or the 50 lbs of ceramic rings. All systems are drip fed, and filtered down to 100 micron. All the rays are housed in 3 systems. To me there's nothing more satisfying then raising rays in systems I built. To me the funnest part of keeping rays is building the systems that support them replacing money with labor.
