Yeah, I'm 15, responsible, and practically a steady 4.0 student:D. They ask what I want for Christmas and heres the conversation:

Parent: "Hey Matt, what do you want for Christmas? Your brother already asked for an airsoft gun, an iPod, and video games." (for reference, my brother's presents came to about $300:eek:)

Me: "I want a larger fish tank cause my fifteen gallon is too small. Maybe like a 55 gallon or something." (Started the tank around six months ago)

Parent: "No really Matt, what do you want? All of the aunts and uncles are gonna pitch in if you want something big."

Me: "I want a FISH TANK"

Parent: "Okay Matt, I guess you don't want anything:screwy:, so I'm gonna tell your aunts that you just want clothes."

Me: "But... I said I want a fish tank"

Parent: "Matt, you need to be more decisive and make up your mind like your brother. You see, he specified what he wants and now your aunt and uncle are gonna go buy his presents. Matt, you're SO indecisive.":WHOA:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I accept this fact that maybe I was asking for a little much in comparison to my brother. (55 gallon tank = about $180 with filter and heater............................Brother's stuff = look above)

It's a few days after Christmas and I ask my parents if I can buy a fish tank on my own with the money I got from Christmas (alot $$$). I tell them I will pay for everything excpet for maybe the water and the electricity, but I only do 25% water changes every two weeks. And their reply is:Parents: "Matt, you need to get your grades up. You have a 'B' in Spanis(Honors Spanish II ) and Math (Honors Algebra II Trigonometry). That's unacceptable! You're in tenth grade, Matt, these grades count for college! And you need to study for finals. If your grades don't go up you're gonna be up the $#*% creek! "

So I just finished finals (CAKE! :headbang2 ) and I want to ask them again but I'm afraid of what they're gonna say. Do you have any tips or am I completely screwed till I'm out of college, poor, working 12 hours a day trying to support my 2 foot apartment? (metaphor, hopefully won't come true) But really, any suggestions/ tips?

All advice is helpful and in advance, I am thanking everyone who replies and I am very grateful. :Pikachu:

be happy you have a fifteen gallon tank, for some reasons parents are always against fish tanks!

man, wish i could say its not true.... hah.

anyways. tell them if they don't let you get a bigger tank, i'll be getting in touch real soon, as my 8 year old sister just got her first 75G.

Parents can be kind of dumb. What I did was just lots and lots of research, and make sure they KNOW you are serious about it. Are you a member of a local society or club? Join one of those and just really show them your dedication. Don't slack off on anything from house chores to grades, and make sure your 15g is absolutely pristine.

I sort of tricked my mom into it.

I was like, "I have something I want to show you, but it's kinda far so if you could drive me there..."

So we drive to a fish shop and I show her some cute little fishies she's always wanted, and we ask for them and bag them. And then out of nowhere I pull out a big wad of cash, pay for the 40 gallon tank, and have one of the employees help take it to the car.

She never new what hit her.

Just try to explain to them how much this hobby means to you and hopefully they will understand. My parents were kind of like yours but not as bad. After i told them that i really like this hobby they let me upgrade.....and upgrade.....and upgrade again =]

hahah sweet dude!

Point them the Craiglist. I am sure you don't mind secondhand tanks as long as they're in mint condition and sold in deals lower than your parents will anticipate. Perhaps, that will change their mind. You're more conservative than your brother so far.:)

It may not be the money. If you're the "smart" child, they don't want you to get side tracked and frack it all up. You've got Bs- turn those into As. After you get into a good college, they'll loosen the leash.

I totally agree, show your dedication, Parents have to incourge you in your interests. Hey who knows where it will lead.
