One thing that might honestly work, hon, is telling them that you want to persue a career in biology, and having water-bound creatures to study at home will greatly increase your knowledge.

You never know, you might be able to write all kinds of papers and do projects with/on your tank inhabitants.

I would think that if they are really into you doing well in school, try to use that to your bargaining advantage.

All fish have Latin / Scientific names, and learning these will help further your foreign language skills. You learn the root of a word, the root of a type of fish, and you can figure out a lot of its base needs.

I would really just try to wrap it around school.

When my parents didn't want me to get a snake I acted like I had given in. One day while they were out I moved a terrarium into my room and had it sitting out, empty. I never said anything about it and they ignored it. One day they come home and BOOM!! -- there's a snake in there with all the bells and whistles of reptile care. They were shocked. They knew telling me to get rid of it was not an option (being a girl comes with that innate ability to cry when occasions call for it; it's sweet), so they had to deal and I had my snake.

I don't know if something like that would be possible.... but I have always been a strong believer in the fact that they can't reprimand you for having something if they don't know you have it =D

Good luck, hon!!! Let us know how it goes, yeah??

 That's hilarious...

I got my dad involved in fishkeeping and every time we went out to a pet shop I would buy A fishkeeping mag and leave them lying around..Then I got a 55 Gal! =]]

I'm 21 and I've been keeping fish for awhile now. My folks had a tank many moons ago but sold it because they got tired of cleaning it. I came home one day with a 10 gal. and they flipped. I still have that 10 gal. tank... and a 29.....and a 34..... and may be moving up to a 55+ this year. Here's the plan: get a pickup truck when you get your license. Look up some stuff on craigslist (my 34 came from craigslist. It was cycled with heater, lid, light, decor, xp3 filter + reptile stuff for $75!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and seal the deal. Pick up your order and shove it in your room while no one is looking. I did the same thing with my 34 at first.

I'm in college now (Junior-ish) and i've got the fishkeeping bug bad. I kept my tank up through high school and graduated at the top of my class. I'm among the top of my class here in the college of engineering with 2 more fish tanks. You've got the potential, fishkeeping won't interfere with anything (it does make it easy to put off that homework though....).

Your folks will get over your new tank. Or they'll lock you in your room, drill a hole in the door and shove hotdogs through when you're hungry. Either way, you'll be fine; you have your fish, right?

i know what you mean man
my parents HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the idea of fishkeeping. i have a 5g tank and a 5.5g tank. i have fry that i will have to separate male/female so im gonna need another 5g for the males but thats it
they said i can get a 30 (29)g if i can pull 80% and above in all grades exept math which i need at least a C. (If C seems easy, understand that i suck really bad at math lol)
im 13 btw and in 8th grade

If its your own money just buy it and put it in your room they cant legally take it off you as its your money. i always buy stuff without my parents permission and they will get over it. its worked for me for years.

and keep your grades up and im sure they will be happy

That was what I did too. They would say no, I would wait a while and then buy it anyway, set it up when they weren't home, etc. Often they wouldn't even notice things for weeks anyway :D.

They got mad initially but eventually they just gave up and I could bring home whatever I wanted. Often they would come to like the animals I would bring home too, lol.

The only thing they ever really freaked about was the 8 foot coastal carpet python I brought home for a while for my friend. He needed time to get supplies and a cage, etc. I had it in my house for a good three weeks before my mom noticed it, but when she did, I sure heard an earful, lol. Once she found out I was just holding it for someone she calmed down a lot, but still wanted it gone ASAP :D.

I got a tank and just put it right next to my other. At quick glance it just looks like one tank. Nobody noticed (at least they didn't say anything) and I have had it set up for almost a year.

I also have 10-12 smaller 10 and 20 gallon tanks out in the garage, once you get that many other people find it hard to tell the difference between just re setting one up or setting up a new 55. lol
