calgary
i have been absolutly tortured by this little bd for the last month.this is hands down by far the most resiliant fish i have ever seen.theirs a massive story behind this ray not going into that detial now.

its been here fo one month.after a few days it started eating for 2-3 days than stated freaking out.my water quality has always been good just our calgary water is super hard/super high mineral content and high ph of 8ish.acclimation might be hard on him ,big shock.

i will start from day 1. tanks been dark since day one and still is!!
got him acclimated turned up th temp to around 89 and added salt on day 3.the ray started eating chopped shrimp ,earth worms, snails and black worms .for two three days it ate fine.i lowered the temp slowly to 84 and started doing water changes to flush out the salinity.than the rays stopped eating on about day 7-8.it also started fraking out lashing swimming crazy freaking out.i moved it into a smaller tank in the basement in a very dark corner and has been in that 90 gallon all alone for 3 weeks now. After i moved it i have kept evey thing extremely stable.i added prazipro for 3 days than had to stop treatment because the ray was swimming upside down.i was thinking maybe a internal worm was causing it not to eat,but i was wrong.prazi had very negative effects this time.than a few days late i noticed red on the underside of disc which than turned into swores or wounds that looked like burns maybe it was? it was possible cause my heater was uncoverd than.but these wounds started to spread and then the viens started turning red like ammonia poisioning. redness in the viens of the ray was all over the underside.i added salt and raised the temp back to 87.it healed up fine after a few days.i flushed salt out again and now the wounds and the red ness is coming back on the top of the disc and i am going to call it bacteria for sure thats causing this.which than turned into ulcer disease with open wounds with fungus around the edges feeding on the bacterial infested areas.

the cause of this bad shipment!! i began force feeding it with a tube and noticed the rays strenght and energy is getting better.now i find the ray upside down swimming or even just laying like that all the time.i flip him sevral times a day and this has been going on for a week.why wont it just die already.theirs alot of o2 in the tank thats what i think keeps it alive when its upside down all the time.

today i added marcyn plus to cure the bacterial problem.i hope it works.i am not going to use salt in the water anymore maybe just squirt onto the areas that are effected bad.
now today the ray has learned to keep its mouth closed tight i cant force feed him anymore.

any insight ideas on this anybody? ever had this before and would like to discuss it?? .i am not going to use and hard medications i beleive that the water quality i have maintained and the high levels of dissolved o2 kept this little guy alive this long and the recent force feedings.

treatments??

i dont beleive that this "bacteria problem" caused the ray to stop eating.it was fine still with no signs of damage at all when it stopped eating.iuts very weird that it started eating than stoped.why did it take two weeks for this to show up like this.

cal... could it BE possible that your ammonia is spiking without u know it? with ur ph and temp high like this, i have read that it just magnifies the ammonia toxin... how big is that ray?? being just in a 90gal... ur ammonia could be spiking and in fact causing ammonia burn.... just a suggestion...

the only thing i notice is the size of the tank looks extremely small. not sure what ur using as filtration but maybe your biological on a small tank like that is not enough for a ray leading to all the skin deterioration? probly ray is slowely dieing

the ray is 10" the tank is 90 gallons.its fine i test the water in that tank every day.theirs never been ammonia spikes not once.the ammonia poisioning is from shipment.i am very anal when it comes to testing the water.i like to know whats going on always and with this one i really want to know and learn. if they water was bad at all i bet he would die right away, thats why i am so scared to medicate

no its not spiking i know for a fact but you are right about the high temp

i might add the temp is at 78.5 now i will maintain it low like this now.i have noticed good results already with cooler water

that's brutal looking, sorry to hear your ray is hurting. seems to be a fighter though, we can hope it pulls through.

never seen an infection like that before, that's ridiculous.

IMO ammonia burn wouldnt ever be this extreme

does anybody know if marcyn plus is ray safe.i know people that have used it and it worked but after i added it today my ray is going nuts now. these meds are too hard for him? i need something else that can aid in the healing of the open wounds on the ray. i was thinking of netting him ray and squirting super salty water on the open wounds or adding pimafix tomorrow.

dont know if pimafix will be ok with marcyn plus anybody know? pimafix will aid in the healing of the open wounds.i want this treatment to be 100% effective this is probably my only chance.if i am wrong i dont have much time it hasnt ate much in weeks .since i lowered the temp and started force feeding it has improved alot except ulcers are geting worse. What i am getting at is i need to heal the wounds quickly and wack the bacteria thats causing this problem all at once.maybe not possible

Could it be that your ray have fish tuberculosis (Mycobacterium)...?
I have some experience with this disease in other types of fish, and i have a small feeling this could be the problem...

If you have a microscope (http://www.aquaticcommunity.com):
Looking a slides of infected tissue under a microscope is sometimes enough to recognize Mycobacterium marinum, but in most cases a bacterial culture will be necessary. Both Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium marinum are acid fast, which means that they stain bright pink against a blue background.
