I doubt there are many umbees thicker than this dovii!

That's a wild fish though. Either way even in the aquarium same size fish it would be arguable. We don't know the measurment of that fish though so hard to compare.

No matter what you get,it will most likely be a one fish "wet-pet"tank.So on that note, either fish will provide you with entertainment.Heres a tip,get the one that you can get WILD CAUGHT.That should be the deciding factor. If you can get a WC Dovii and a CB Umbee, get the Dovii.........

so hard to choose,, which would you guys rather have?

so doviis get bigger on average in an aquarium enviroment?

Should be the other way around.. I have seen larger umbies than I have dovii's in home aquariums. For whatever reason Dovii have a hard time maxing out to their max size or take many many many years to do so in home aquaria. But keep in mind that Umbies truely need 300g+, with a dovii you can get away with something a little smaller.

You can't really do a male umbie unless you have multiple seperate tanks to grow a couple of them out in so you can tell which is male without them killing each other. Dovii's lots of people sex at a couple inches so it's more straight forward to buy already knowing you have a male, only need one tank to grow him out in, etc. Dovii you can also buy wild or F0, while umbie you can't really get wild..

I kind of wish this thread would die! : )

Look, I am "intimately" familiar with perhaps the largest dovii currently in captivity (short of a public aquarium) and almost certainly the largest umbee. Most of the advice people give on these fish is of little practical value and is, in most cases, just heresay. The bottom line is these fish (like arapaima, RTC's and so many others) just aren't aquarium fish in most cases. The old saying "if you have to ask, it's not for you" is appropriate here.

There are many equal or better looking alternatives that are relatively easy to keep. Grammodes, istlanum, motaguense, loisellei, freddies, etc. are basically the same fish with just a fraction of the problems.

How's this for a "mini-dovii?

I think doviis are pound for pound the ultimate cichlid,if tooken well care of they can be real beautiful displaying ocean blue fins, and blue snouts.

They also have that wonderful personality of being dominant of the tank when mature.

i like the opinions we are getting here and the knowledge passed so im glad this thread hasnt died. newcomers need to learn through this kind of discussion, if no one is there to teach then they can and will go out and score a dovii or umbee or both and throw them in their big 55 and hope for the best for life.
