I think u can't go wrong with either
But I know the Dovii can dart from one side of the tank to the other side to attack a fish like a bullet. LOL seen it many times. I think umbees cant do that because they are built different. King of cichlids are the Doviis imo. They are vicious and nasty killers. A pair of blue Doviis are beautiful too. Not just crazy mean. They got more beautiful colors and shine with the ugly scary face while umbees have the cute baby face but not much iridescent to their colors or shine..
For me, I'd go Dovii for beauty with beast in one.. But umbees are cool too. Cute face on adults but the colors not as exciting as Doviis

Now I have never kept a dovii so I can't fully answer that question, but no jag, amphilophus, vieja, or anything else has come even close to my umbees personality. Period. I have kept NEARLY all of the major infamous glass bangers other than dovii and nothing comes close. In all honesty if every tank in my house was large enough for an umbee, that's what they would all have in them. And as far as the comment about them not being built to jet across the tank to attack something, they are an open water predator which means if anything they are even more capable. Mine can get cover that 8' faster than I can! But neither is a bad choice and both seem to as a whole be full of personality so just go with the one you like the looks of best. I'm sure either way you Wong be disappointed if you get an outgoing specimen. Because that is where the answer lies. It all comes down to the individual. Get a group and keep the most out going!

I have kept several dovii. Currently on my first umbee pair and measured my male today at almost exactly 1' long from nose to tail. I favor the umbees but both are fun to keep.
i would have to say dovii also these are some crazy *** agressive fish. I ahve a few ranging in size from 1.5-10". even at a small size there agression level is unsurpassed. umbee are cool but but the ultimate winner is dovii
What would or how big would a tank or pond need to be to house a Male Dovii and Umbee.
Imagine being able to pull that off!!! Two 2 foot monsters in the same area of water. I am guessing a large pond maybe 10 feet all around might work.

I've owned both species at monster sizes and tend to favor dovii alot more than umbees. Umbees are nice but I think the dovii look alot better and show more colors. Well in my opinion of course. Personality can go either way with both fish. They both can be pyscho and destroy anything that they want. Also they dont call dovii "the king of all cichlids" for nothing. I think they earned that title. The umbee is right behind it.
