UMBEE

Yeah Umbie's are real nice looking fish. Also they are the fastest growing fish I have ever had and I've had lots of fish in my fish keeping experience. My current Male Umbie grew to 9 inches in 6 months from less than 1 inch long when I got him from a fellow ACA member. He killed all his siblings once he hit 5 inches and then from there just grew at an amazing rate. I powerfeed him all the time but in return I do 2 to 3 50% water changes a week. This resulted in great growth.

I have had both dovii and umbriferum. P.dovii does tend to hid allot. They are ambush predators that pounce on the smaller cichlids that they eat in nature. C.umbriferum is more of a cruise predator that chases down the tetras and livebearers that they eat. The record for a captive umbee was 80cm. That's close to three feet! Good luck and I hope you can handle a very large tank for these guys.

I know exactly what you mean. I have never seen a fish eat so much (umbee). My Umbee would eat 5 times more then my dovii. My dovii would attack the food with a blow and run off to enjoy it. And if it was still hungry it would attack anther but never more then what it could eat. The Umbee in the other hand will devour it’s food (a ok size live gold fish) at times the head of the gold fish would be sticking out of the mouth. The umbee will then try to disable another fish. Once the first gold fish has reached the belly of the beast he would eat the wounded fish. He will cut and dismantle the remanding gold fish for no reason other then to later eat in small servings. I know some oscars become very aggressive if left unfed. This is true for Umbees. The only different is an oscar won’t show simi aggression unless left unfed for a week or 2. While the Umbee will show extreme aggression in a matter of hours.

even though i am an true umbeefanatic, i am about to get a 110g., and i am thinking seriously about getting a dovii. my umbee is growing like crazy since i stated to feed him cut fresh shrimp. HE LOVES THAT ****, onle about 4 inches or so, but will eat about five shrimp a day!

I know precisely what you mean. I have both and both are amazing. I wish there was a way to house both of these animals together. A 4 inch Umbee is like a small puppy where a 7 inch umbee is like a bull. It’s amazing when Umbee’s are young ( 4 inches) there considered by "some" as community fish. But when they grow to be 7 to 8 inhes there considered extreme killers. Dovii's seem to get more aggressive as well, however, it does not matter wither a dovii is 4 or 8 inches dovii’s are always considered aggressive.

Ive had the opportunity to keep both of these species but I have to admit that I enjoyed the Dovii more. As mentioned before, a Dovii is more of an ambush killer which makes things pretty interesting at feeding time.

As for the Umbee, they tend to take longer to color up but when they do, they are amazing.

i have a question to all of those who have had the pleasure of rasing umbees. i've heard that for some reason males are more rare to get. i read somewhere someone saying that theyve had at least 10 youngsters from their lfs and all ended up being female. are there just more females born or is that just a myth.

I have 4 juvenile Umbies (2-4) hopefully soon I'll see if I get a pair out of them. Any one know how to sex them at this early stage??
