Got home today to find my small umbees hovering near an ornament and all other fish up in a corner of the 1400L.
Upon closer inspection I discovered that the umbees had spawned and there was eggs on the top of an ornament!!!
I could not believe it!!!, So chuffed!!
The female is 13cm & the male 9.5cm, so they are tiny as, certainly wasn't trying to spawn them.......

Now I have removed the 20cm pleco who was getting chomped by the umbees a lot and just left the pair in with the other fish for the moment.

I'll get some photos up soon, had to use a flash so colours are not right but you will be able to see the eggs etc.

Anyone know if I should be removing the eggs to a fry saver or leaving the eggs in the community tank?
Keen to hear peoples thoughts.

My male, looks shiny as in person!

Thanks reallybigfish and thanks steelshade.

so should I just leave the pair in the community tank with 2 severums, a carpinte and 4 GT's?
Or should I remove the ornament that the eggs are on.....??
Could the pair bond of these fish be broken by disturbing them?

Seems noone on a couple of websites can give me a definite plan of action.

Your thoughts MFKeepers?

iv never had umbees so just putting that as my disclaimer but what i would do is that since that are so small and this is their first spawn is i would leave them in the community to raise the eggs and get some experience in being parents, just watch REALLY closely for aggression and if they start flipping out remove them or divide them GOOD LUCK

you can take them out if you want, but if you leave them in the parents will be able to keep more of them alive becase the parents will help feed them.

Ahh cool, thanks for your thoughts!

Yeah I didn't think about the parents keeping more alive due to the way they help feed the little ones.... hmmmmm

Ok the eggs are still there, though there is less as the mum has been eating all the unfertilised eggs.
she seems to be chasing the male off, what does this mean?
Any ideas?

Nice Umbees, where did you get them from?

Hi cichlidfever, I got the male from a LFS, it was one of the runts of the batch...heheh, not any more!
The female is from a batch a forum member got sent to Perth from Melbourne.
I have 3 other females too, one 20cm, one 7cm & one 8cm.
He's my only male.

Just caught the female eating all the eggs!!! Ahhh, removed ornament and about 30 eggs.
Hope some will hatch.....
Might have to remove other tank occupants so they can have a proper go at spawning.
