UPDATE ON BEANI

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The beani looks incredible but to be honest a 300 gallon is simply not big enough to house a rtc for any legitimate length of time. I think somewhere along the lines of a few thousand gallons is neccesary. Were talking about a fish that will easily reach 3 ft+ which is about the radius of a 300 gallon rubbermaid. Again the beani is a freakin stud and great job but you have to think that the cats nocturnal and the beanis not which i believe could stress him quickly.

Settle down guys, I said I have 2 other tanks it can go in if needed. As of right now, the cat is the size of your thumb. If I notice the beani getting stressed out at all the cat will get moved to another tank.

And I haven't bought the Rubbermaid yet, so I can always go bigger. 300 gallons is pretty damn big, but hey, that's why I'm posting on this site, for information. If a bigger tub than 300 gallons is needed, then that's what I need to do.

Thanks to everyone for the admiration posts on the pictures. And thanks to all for the help and also looking out for my fish. It's much appreciated.

I have learned a lot from you guys in the past and will not let what happened before repeat itself.

I'd jut like to be optimistic and hopeful that the two will live peacefully since I have seen it before with a 22 inch cat being housed with 2 motags half it's size and could fit both in its mouth, not to mention the convicts that were in the tank that didn't get touched either.

While I seriously doubt that a juvie RTC is going to stress out a 10" male beani, no matter how you slice it this tank (or any of the others you currently own) are going to be anywhere near large enough for an RTC long term. I suspect that you already know that, hence the reason why you have already considered a 300 gallon tub.

Under proper conditions, your 4" juvie RTC could easily reach 22" by this time next year, and while your friend may have gotten lucky with his RTC & his cichlids, there is no guarantee on how any large catfish is going to view his tank mates once that cat begins putting on some girth. Lots of people on MFK have been optimistic about keeping an RTC with other fish, and lots of those people came to eventually realize their mistake. And of course most of those mistakes take place in the dark of the night so its not likely you will be present if an intervention is required. lol

Most people that buy juvie RTC's keep them for less than 2 years due to the amount they eat, how quickly they grow, and the bio-load they place on a system.

But hey, your fish, your call. Good luck.

Yeah I fully realize that. It was never meant as a permanent situation anyways, and did not plan on keeping a 22 inch catfish in a 160 gallon tank either unless it starts stressing the beani out sometime between now and the time it hits 10ish inches, it will be going into the other 160 gallon by itself. Which will also be its home until I buy the pond for it.

I guess I should have clarified that before. So no I will not be keeping a 2ft catfish with a beani half the size in a 160 gallon tank lol.
