update on my fronts (load warning!!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I heard the same things as others have told you, i had seen some pics of them and they just dont look right IMO, THere is also one called a "panda" that is basicly messed up stripes that appear as big circles instead of a single long stripe. The panda i saw was also red. Most people i know stay away from them.

red fronts are line breed, not really red, not really nice looking at all... I would stay away... Breeders are not all they are cracked up to be either...

but if you are wanting to be sure, a good breeder is a great idea....

i've never seen one... anyways i took you guyses advice and finally got the back ground with black paint!! they look great!! the 5 in thin bar isn't pale anymore... the rocks i dont know if i can set up because i have slate rock and even with my 3 foot step ladder i cant reach the bottom of the tank so i have no idea what i'm going to do for decoration.... i was thinking of one 12 in pot so that they may breed but i'm afraid of aggression building.... anyways the apple snail in there jut laid eggs... so i guess thats a start with breeding haha... thanks for all the advice!!

What about getting big driftwood for the tank, i have driftwood in mine and it does not effect the ph like so many people say, my main piece is old wood, but the other wood i got is new i got malasian driftwood, hard and sinks right away, and no tannins are released and it would be light weight for installing it.

I have also found that if you do buy wood with tannins you can boil it in a pot on low (simmer) for about 4 hours and the tannins will leach out the wood like a tea bag in hot water, what ever is left is not noticable as long as your doing good maintence (weekly water changes etc..)

great method, really works, but for monster tanks it is difficult to boil a stump... for my buddy with the 2200 african tank he is setting up...

Try using the outside turkey fryers and a big aluminum tub. (the kind for horses found at farm stores and cooking seafood down south, My husband called it a number 3 tub.)You can fit really big stuff in them. Do it outdoors in the summertime, you can also get a big metal tub and do it in a big firepit with logs, logs for the fire , logs for the tank LOL.

Thanks, I can get one of those, and I wll see about a tub... Thanks...

I've never seen something like that before. Now I'm confused...

Lake cichlids need different water to aros and Bala sharks, don't they? Or don't they mind? Please tell me so I can buy some colourful additions to my tank!

In general african cichlids need a higher ph and like hard water. While new worlds need to have lower ph and soft (acidic) water. With that said, many are now able to keep them togeither since many fish farms are breeding and raising them in the states in ph between 7-8 . Even though my fronts were bred and raised in a ph around 7-7.5 when i got them my water is a ph of almost 9 out of my tap and find they really flourish. I have tried twice to keep new worlds in this water and both times it ended in disaster. I have also heard (and saw a bit first hand ) that the africans and newworlds communicate with body language a bit differently. Example when a african and new world have a face off, the new world uses the body language common for new worlds that says: i give up. For africans that same body language is : lets go another round, i think i can take ya. That obviously can cause some rather severe problems .

About the tubs: We have a store in NY and also MI called Tractor Supply Store (TSC store) they carry a large selection of these large metal tubs, i just set mine on the turkey fryer/boiler. It takes a bit of time to get that large amount of water going but once it does it works good. It is also good to use these tubs for boiling seafood cajun style (no cichlids LOL) when not fixing your driftwood LOL. Yum.
