From the perspective of the fish, its not ghetto at all.

The fish have a healthy amount of room and as long as you keep up with the maintenance, the water quality should be good.

I do think its kinda hard to monitor fish health if you can't see them that well but you said it was a temporary holding area anyway. I also agree with some of the others about the risk of puncture to the side.

Overall, I think this is a good model for an "emergency" tank.
