Amazing....!

Thanks! the camera doesn't really do them justice but that pic came out much better then I had hoped it would. The Amazing part is seeing these big Trops in person... the big one is as thick as my husbands bicept. I thought Jaws was pretty good sized until these guys joined the pool.

Naw.. but I have considered seriously looking into what the farms do to breed gar and getting the trops tested to see if they are m/f... as I imagine they are old enough to be mature. would be heck of a fun project if it was feasible... I'm a purist at heart when it comes to fish... I don't begrudge hybrids.. but I won't actively try to produce any. ;) Though If it was even reasonably doable I'm sure someone would have done it by now in the states.

The bigger gar is at least seven years old.

Awesome Thread! I would love to get mine to breed as well-seems to be a pipe dream though. Not sure what stimulates the act, probably seasonal change of course but what is the actual trigger? That would be great to find out.

from what I understand its a seasonal trigger by the spring thaw/raise in water as they go into the weedy/flooded areas to spawn in droves... so its gotta be environmental. I have thought of adding some spawning mops for koi for some decoration/hiding w/ the added idea I might have a snowballs chance at something happening by shear dumb luck. maybe David or Richard if he's still lurking might have further insight.. from what I understand its mainly hormone supplementation.... not sure if they are milked or if they spawn. I know a few people have spawned gar by shear accident but its pretty rare and iir they where in ponds ect. and used floating weeds/mops.
