Just keep them well fed and you will be fine. If you try to skimp on feeding they will start killing tankmates.

Found that out the hard way. They don't even like third day feedings. Max is second day, best is a little daily and third day full feedings.

As I have said many times. A fillet a day kept them from going on a rampage. Then I would feed the whole tank on my standard 3 day feed for gars. They got special treatment. Half a tilapia fillet each every day at the very least a big hand full of massivore.

Last night they started eating.. I ended up throwing 2 handfuls of massivore in as the goldfish are now 100% gone..lol.. and another handful went in this morning.. the big one ate on ehandful last night and one this am.. O.O... the littler one ate a handful last night.

but we are off to the lfs for another round of goldfish... and some carni sticks or something that I can easily stuff into tilapia/fish fillets. think i'm also gonna be doing alot of panfish fishing this year....

I found feeding live food to gar bring up aggression so maybe you should start feeding dead fish from now on.

I've found it to be the exact opposite tbh. and since these guys obviousely don't care if it's live or dead.. I'm thinking giving the "option" to eat live vs always getting dead "Might" keep them from deciding to go on a hunting expedition of their tank-mates. and to have food always available... live is the only way to go.

I found "hungry gar" to be the most aggressive gar. But I have found "Bored gar" to also be dangerous to tank-mates.

No need to stuff them into fillets. They will take them from the top. More work then it is worth. Glad to see they are eating.

The big one is a right piggy, and you're right she scoops the massivore up w/out any hesitation... pretty funny watching.. she will come and get her fill and everyone else 'cept the other trop kinda hangs back and waits until she's "lazy" about eating then they come in careful to avoid the trops and eat. I'm assuming they established their dominance quick and effectively ( so far not even one fin shred I can find) I have seen her eye up the other tank-mates doing her rounds... but thus far shes left them alone. I have noticed a few dozen feeders gone each night still but no clue if its the gar or the cats making the dent. prolly abit of both.

Justin and I where working on the filtration last night abit and its pretty funny.. she has to come check us out if we've got hands in the water. she is 100% not afraid of humans at all. I threw a handful of pellets in on the otherside of the pool to keep her busy.

I must say...watch your fingers....they have smashed glass test tubes before. They have got me once. They even bite the tongs I used as a "shark stick". If your arms are in they are not as quick to bite but make a fist if they come close they will still try for a finger. Any time they would start to come close I would go wide and mess with their tails or push them away from mid body and give them a petting as they swam away. 100% no fear. All my other gars learned to stay clear while the Trops were eating. In fact my Cuban was still shy to eat right away at its new owners house. Missed out on a few feeds do to his rays. He has rays with gars but he is a braver man then I on that combo.
