Upgrading tank size advise.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They break easily because they are cheaply made. My lfs used one (don't know why) and the top popped off, flooding the store with 180 gallons of water.
Good to know. Thanks! They probably use them bc of the cheap price and having so many tanks and fish. Sure it gets expensive running a LFS.

So I currently have a penguin bio wheel 350. It works really well for me. I do water changes 1-2 x per week, depending on per another readings. (I honestly over feed a bit, due to the baby EBJD. I want those guys out of the sensitive baby stage as soon as possible.) Would it work for the bigger tank to just add a 2nd of the same thing, or is a canister going to be the way to go?

I upgraded my tank in December from a 100 gallon to a 400 gallon. I knew that from the moment i switched the old tank off to me having the new one ready would be a while so i got a pond tub from my lfs a d moved all of my fish and most of the water into this tub. I took my filters, air stone and heaters out of the tank and put them in this tub and the fish ended up being in there for around 6 weeks before they ended up in the new tank. Had no issues with it other than it took up my whole lounge which my dad wasnt too impressed with especially since he told me to have it gone by Christmas and it ended up still being there over christmas. I also didnt use much of my old water when i moved the fish into the new tank, maybe 100 litres of it. But i did put my old filters on the new tank for about a month as i hadnt cleaned them out.

Nice looking fish.

The driftwood you have looks like it's resin, is that right? I would replace that with real drift wood or oak or manzanita branches as part of the upgrade.

Sun Suns are inexpensive but I know a few people that have them and have had no problems. The reviews on Amazon are pretty good too.

aquaclear HOB filters are great, i have a aquaclear 110 im going to use and it works great, only complaint is that the leveling pin doesn't keep it very stable so im going to make a wooden leveler

Yeah the SunSuns are fine I've never heard of the tops popping off or see how that could even happen if you put the latches on. I have one and would buy another. To me they appear to be direct knock offs of the Marineland C series canisters. I bet they're made in the same factory. Chinese factories do this sort of thing often.

I also have aquaclear 110s I run two of them on my 55. They're nice. The best filter you can use is a sump though. I would maybe look into getting a tank with an over flow and just run a DIY sump.
