what is there to say? that situation is the worst . . . you did what I would do (and have done), which is to try to tell the customer what they are in for . . . sometimes they listen, more often they don't

were you in a big-brand store, or just a regular LFS? not to deliberately knock the big stores, but I'd be really surprised if any of the private LFS in my area would let someone do something so stupid . . .

there are these 3 huge pet shops (like twice the size of the biggest petsmart ive ever been to) called "allpetsclub" here in CT and theyve got healthy stock and variety no matter what sort of animal youre looking at in the store. the fish section staff are very knowlegable, and one employee was actually getting pissed off at a guy who kepy saying he knew what he was doing and he was buying a silver aro. i guess the guy wouldnt tell the employee his tank size or something.
just thought id throw that in there...

there are some good points made, that the LFS is in business to sell fish, and they have to move product (customer is always right, etc.) . . . my thought was that if you give people the information, they can make an informed choice.

for example if someone has a 20G, they might do this:

1) all I have is a 20G, maybe I should buy a few Rams, some otos, maybe a few corys
or
2) I really want an Oscar, maybe I should ditch the 20G and upgrade to a 55G

sure, you can't literally stop someone from doing the wrong thing - - and it's true, many of us learned by doing the wrong thing - - but I'd still speak up. I'm just not confrontational about it.

I think when a fishkeeping noob walks into an lfs, thy should have to tell a worker their tanks size. Tht way, the person can pick out fish that they like that are suitable for that size tank, and the store still gets to make money.

Then they should always lie and say 180 instead of the 10 gallon they actually have, and still walk away with fish that will get too big

I think species like pacus deserve outta the hobby. for every 1 with a good home, there are 200 who are in 30 gallon tanks like that.

But let's face it, some people who buy the kind of things like pacus, oscars, and catfish and put them in a 30 gallon regardless of a fair warning, probably won't be in the fish hobby for long. Some people just don't care.

:iagree: I don't know why you guys are still discussing this. The answer if right here.

All you are going to do is get yourselves worked up about something you can do nothing about. Its frustrating yes, and it makes you feel helpless, but the reality of it is that its going to continue to happen no matter how many times you try to stop it.
