With only a month or two experience, are you comfortable giving out advice?

Yes. I do.

We do our research, and we're learning. I'm always open to be corrected. I feel like if anything, giving out advice helps us learn because there's always someone more experienced than me that will be able to be right behind me with better suggestions or corrections.

I didn't realize there was a minimum ray-keeping period to be able to give out advice. As far as I'm concerned, someone could learn a lot more from those who have the perspective that we do rather than someone going around saying that people are not qualified to give advice.

Not only that, but you have no idea the amount of time we put into stingrays... or how much they mean to us. We are constantly learning about them. Where most people treat them like the next exotic fish, we're treating them much like our mammal pets.

If you felt there was something wrong with my advice, maybe you could just say that so we can all learn from it. And if you're wanting to help a new MFK member, it would be a lot more respectable for you to message them instead of question their adequacy publicly.

You might not have spoken to this one:

also,,,,,,,,,you may want to try vitamin B1 & B12 tablets (dry pills, not gell or gell coated you can buy at any phamacy) in your filter.
As the Vitamins desolve they add to the water what the ray maybe missing and B12 will usually kick-start hunger and feeding

I've heard it recommended a few times, it is found naturally in their diet and it probably helped in our case. Keeping it dark and warm is also good thing with almost anything wrong with your rays, and it is worth a try.

We used 1/2 standard tablet size (250mg of B1, listed in the nutritional value section on the bottle) per 50 gallons. That is what was recommended to us, we tried it, and it appeared to have worked.

Have you tried offering the ray different foods? I've heard of rays refusing blackworms and gobbling down pellets; might be worth a try, if it does get beyond what you feel comfortable with or you have the other foods lying about.

Good luck, and hope the little sucker gets back to chowin' down again! :headbang2

We need a sticky/thread for things like this. Maybe a treatment thread? I'll see if I can find anything on it, or if miles or anyone else has any material lying around to get it started.

Sometimes I like you so much because we think so much alike..

but then sometimes I don't ;)

mmmmmm..

Ok let's not derail but the Vitamin B1 I believe is stated in alot of the stingray books because Dr. Richard Ross was an advocate of supplementing vitamin B, especially when feeding goldfish because they contain thiaminase which makes some fish thiamin deficient..

My only thought ... aren't most vitamins water soluble? ie: useless unless ingested...? (this is why pelleted food is more nutritionally advanced.. beblondie has a great thread/post about vitamin consumption) http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65770&highlight=vitamin+thiaminase&page=3

Goldfish have sharp spines.. could have poked him in the stomach and he just need time to heal.

Goldfish could of been 'copperized' from treatment - but these sounded like pet goldfish not feeder goldfish so they probably weren't 'copperized' recently..

Could of had a disease - but the other rays and goldfish would likely show signs..

offer live worms... keep the tank warm and dark... motorrrrros are tough you should be fine.. I wouldnt worry for another week or so

I'm only posting this because it is related to the original question.

Not to be contrary here, but I think you have it a bit backwards Miles. I'm no vitamin expert, but I do know a bit about chemistry and biology and "water soluble" simply means that it dissolves in water. "Fat Soluble" would mean that it doesn't dissolve in water, and would therefore need to be eaten.

I'm also no expert on elasmobranch physiology, but I just figured that it was worth mentioning. :)
