A friend of mine has a pair of albino senegal bichirs, the male is 7'' and the female is 8''. He is thinking about injecting hormones from carp to induce them to breed. Has anyone done this successfully? Also, is it dangerous to the fish? Any help would be greatly appreciated...how much to use etc. Thanks

It's done as routine in hatcheries around the globe. I wouldn't use carp hormones though. There is a product available that's proven and has a good safety record. Syndel puts out a synthetic fish spawning kit. A 10ml vial of injectable breeding hormone, called Ovaprim, runs about $30.

beblondie had a female sen that died from becoming full of eggs at a young age. Not sure what triggered that, she didn't inject hormones into her fish.

If your friends' sens are at least a year and a half, should be okay.

In the sticky on breeding it says that carp hormones were one of the hormones used, so im hoping that it should be ok.Hes's a bit worried on how much to use.Does anyone know how much per gram of body weight?

Hopefully the hormones he bought would have directions, but if they don't, here is the recommended dose for Ovaprim, which comes from salmon:

"A general dose of Ovaprim® is 0.5 ml per kilogram of bodyweight."

He actually removes the hormones from the carps head himself, dries it out, crushes it to powder, adds the injecting solution and it should be ready.

IN MY OPINION ANYTHING ARTIFICIAL ALWAYS HAS IT'S DRAWBACKS, IT IS ALWAYS A GAMBLE. BUT THEN AGAIN, THERE ARE CALCULATED RISKS.

Why does ur fren even want to breed them... IDK, but injecting artificial stuff into animals to acheive something is just not natural. Ya and this goes for GM foods T.T

They are easy to breed without hormones and if you have to ask here how to use them you will probably kill your fish.

Im just asking to see if anyone has successfully done it.My friend has used this method several times with cichlids to bring on breeding but never with bichirs.
