uv sterilizer question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I hooked up today the uv, but can't really tell yet if does anything... I guess if there is no algae in the tank I'm satisfied. Other than that I have no idea how to tell if it does any good..
My tank is running for 2 weeks now, so it's steal pretty clear and no algae.

Uv's are really difficult to see if they are working, if you have algae, then add a uv and then no more algae then it's worked, but if your tank is algae free and you add a uv for level 1 or 2 sterilisation then it's difficult to see results.

so i just ordered 2 of these [h=1]SunSun HW-402B 4-Stage External Canister Filter w/ 9W UV Sterilizer, 264 gph[/h]
i hope they work out well. ill have 18w total and an extra 500+ gph flow :nilly: yea

Sounds like a good purchase!

Honestly.... I can't tell how my UV is doing, which is probably a good thing.

I don't have any algea, besides 2 tiny spots on a driftwood very close to the light, but you can only tell if you really look.

Still considering getting the same filter and uv on the left side of the tank to make sure i absolutely get the job done.

I think the true pay-off of this system will be proven, if it's possible to keep some fishes that can manage higher ph then usual, because of lack of bacteria, like the chocolate gourami's.
They need low ph because of certain bacteria can't grow in those conditions, but with the UV, you could probably keep it around 7 and be fine (but i'm only guessing, i don't actually know this to true).

But all in all, this is hopefully going to contribute to keep algae in the tank down if I'm also careful with light and nutrients, but also the general health of whatever fish i'm going to put in it.

I'm still cycling though, I can't wait for it to be completed, I'm getting tired of looking at an empty tank.
