true.. but a uv alone will not kill all the ich.

you both are right but something:headbang2not trying to kill the ich with the uv but trying to keep it under control for the moment you know dont need things getting worse on me

not as good as proper Quarantine habits and putting the UV on slowest flow manufacture recommends but never had a outbreak of ich in 20 years with my setups having the UV's on them. But I also have great suppliers and LFS that I buy from as well as proper QT and an eye for any stress or sickness in fish that is why I encourage others to be very observant to the fish they are looking at and setting up a QT tank as well

how many fish do you have. for my hospital is just a 10g. most fish will be ok in a 10g for a week or 2. just not longer. i keep 1 running all the time. heater, powerhead and some pvc for them to hide around in. dont put any rock no need.

I use a 20 gallon tank and a 75 gallon tank for QT I have just a heater, basic light, sponge filter and PVC pieces for spots to hide. I only have 3 tanks at the time as with school I had to shrink my collection but for years I had 30 tanks with at least a thousand fish and corals going. And, will have a bigger system soon as I am going to start my coral propagation business again but building a greenhouse very soon

I have a UV in my tank and i still had a ick outbreak which makes you wonder if a UV is necessary. Ick in the marine world is something that we will all go through and it is very hard to battle in a reef tank since we cant use copper meds. Well in all honesty i would recommend you to use the uv because i can only imagine how bad my ick outbreak would have been if i didnt have a uv, believe me it would have been worst, plus there are other things you must worry about besides ick that a uv can help with for example parasites in water when we do water changes. Get that hospital tank/qt tank setup and i think you should be fine, just remember that the display tank will have ick and cysts/eggs in the tank for up to 6 weeks so go fishless for that timeframe. Goodluck and let us know what works for you

thanks man i also hope all goes well....uv was hooked up today....

hmmm surprised no one has suggested cleaner shrimp. theyre not a cure but a very good maintenance method. not just skunks either, many other shrimp perform cleaning duties. but it takes a little for the fish to accept them fully.

idk whats in your tank besides the fish but i've used rid ich with many inverts and had no problem, it worked well too.

also, why hasn't anyone mentioned temp! it is the #1 thing when it comes to ich!
this is what i go by
< or = 76 expect ich
< 78 be ready
maintain 80-82 in a reef with ich, 82-84 fish only (always monitor!!!)

ich can be cured by high temps alone if caught early!!!

i have a reef and have gotten inadvertant temp drops(friggin ferret!!!) twice that allowed my tank to drop to about 74, i normally maintain 78. expecting ich i immediately maintained 80f. within 2 days a few spots showed up on my tangs, but with the help of the artificial fever my peppermints and fires took care of the tangs.
