Agreed, It's not just fish. I think that if people did research, and actually knew what they were looking for, it would be much better. I mean, no new person goes into a store and says "I want Tinfoil Barbs!" or "I want Pacus!". If potentially large fish weren't kept in stores, and were by special order only, this wouldn't be such a problem.

In my opinion, i dont see why the stores should not sell certain fish.. The LFS is there to supply you with all your fish needs, common or rare and big or small.. The stores job is to have what you want when you want it.. If i wanted to go and buy a pacu and my LFS dont have one, Then i would be kind of annoyed.. Its up to the buyer to edjucate himself with the knowledge of the fish hes buying.. If the person in the store gives out wrong or inaccurate information then thats a different story.. But why should the people that know their stuff hafta suffer because someone else mistreats their fish.. i meen we can sit here and point fingers to whose fault it is all day.. the importers or the wholesaler or the store or consumer..but if the customer had done his homework he would know that that pacu is gunna get to three feet..just my take on the situation..

The problem is that so many pacus are sold to people who don't do their research and just think that the "Piranha" look is cool. In the end, it's the fish that have to suffer and get stunted in undersized tanks because of misinformed people and people who don't do their research. I'm not saying to make big fish illegal, I'm just saying that I think that there should be some restrictions because there are too many of them being sold to inexperienced hobbyists. They should not be sold w/ the regular fish, Like regular fish. They are Monsters (in a good way).

Agreed.. I had a 22 inch pacu that quickly outgrew my largest tank and had to move him into a very large indoor pond.. Great fish.. i have had Jardini arowanas and stuff of that nature also.. i would say that all you would need to change is the usefullness and knowledge of the sales representatives at some LFS.. if they would just be like sir these get very big then that will usually ward off would be victims lol.. but if the customer doesnt ask then usually they just assume you know what your doing..

Trust me you don't want restrictions on fish. It will only lead to more and more restrictions, higher prices and less revenue for the LFS. And when you restrict something you make a black market. You also open up "straw purchases". The key is education. Yes it would be a beautiful world if things like that didn't happen. The truth is that most of those fish are cheap and lots of people don't care. They don't look at fish like they would a dog or cat. IMO you would open a whole new world for PETA to constantly push for more strict laws. As far as I know the only non-endangered (CITIES) freshwater species banned ,here in the states, on a Federal level are snakeheads. I don't want to see anymore unless they are a threat. I am also sure someone can still obtain a snakehead illegally in the states.

How can you verify a future tank size?

Special Order? I like to see the fish in person and observe it for at least five minutes. How do you know it is the "right" one? I also try not to buy a fish if it has not been at the shop for at least a week.

What does "More information required at LFS" mean? If it is that they need to know your tank size? That wouldn't fly, but I like the idea. People already lie to the LFS about their tank sizes to get the fish they want. I have seen people on here rant about how the PetCo/PetSmart employee had the audacity to ask how large their tank was.

Leaving it as it is would be the best option IMO. People that want to learn come to places like this. Even people who "want to learn" refuse to learn here. A very well known person on here for their picture threads and sexing threads is very extreme example. This was not meant as a low blow, only an example.

I am giving this as my whole hearted honest opinion. I may get flamed, but I think we are loosing way to many privileges and rights in this country as it is. These are my two cents, plus some. I am anti fish control!

while working at deathco i've heard the "i'll get a bigger tank when/if the fish gets too big" only i know that the person isn't going to do it, because the fish well get too big and then stop growing and get stunted then he'll come back, be an ass about how i was wrong and then the fish will die a year later and he'll buy another. i also get a lot of the customers who truly don't care as long as the fish lives longer than a month. i also work with people who don't ask about tank sizes, care etc and don't care. they just bag whatever fish the person points to and then say "well it's going to die anyway"

the problem is that in todays world no one cares about anything anymore. LFS don't care what happens to the fish after it leaves the store, the consumer wont care if the fish is in too small of a tank.........it's a never ending battle. :(

Actually, I do want more restrictions on fish. If you don't know why and think I'm crazy, then just think of me you see an RTC or Pacu or Tinfoil Barb or (Insert Monster Fish here) at your LFS. If it's a returnee, think of the irresponsible person that bought it without doing research. If it's young, think of what n00b could just walk in and buy it. I'm not asking monster fish to be illegal, and I did not vote for that (just put it in there to see if anybody was for this). Plenty of people promise to get a bigger tank at the fish store, but the reality is, most of them won't. I think that the LFS employees should at least have to talk about the future requirements of the fish, or make sure that they have a big enough setup at home. The point of Special Order is so that the fish aren't readily available in the store for any old person to waltz in and snag one. By "More information required at LFS", I meant that the LFS should have to provide more info. I'm not flaming you, I'm just saying that being anti-fish control leads to oversized fish in undersized tanks.
