I think we should leave things as it is. Too many changes will be a bad thing at the end. 1st we ban big fish, rare and exotic. Next thing you know, something else will be ban.

What if i say we should ban all tropical fish etc. since too many them getting kill because people cant keep them long then 1 week? Or maybe we should ban all feeder goldfish, rosy; since it cruel. They all bunch in small space and we see their life as meaningless since "they just feeder"

Got my drift

We won't sell any fish that we won't take back.

That's a great policy. Unfortunately, it's the exception and not the rule.

i agree the lfs need to do a better job of letting people know how big the fish will get and how fast it can reach that size so many of the stores around here seem to act as if the fish will only be there for a short time or if you get tired of it then you can come back and get some else maybe for the real monsters out there they should have a waiting peroid where you are given litture to read on that particular fish

Eduation really is the key.

One point I don't think was brought up is cost of special ordering. Ever wonder how the box stores can sell a pacu for $6.99 (cnd $ at petsmart yesterday) ? They buy BOXES of fish. Huge quantities = less cost per unit (fish) = lower prices. If one were to special order that fish not only would you be paying more but paying more for a fish you haven't even seen. I've been burnt on more than one occasion special ordering. Real fun when the supplier sends the wrong fish too.

The other reason lots of LFS would eventually have a problem with the special order system is what if you decide you dont want THAT fish? Normally sending it back to the supplier isn't an option so its going to be up for sale anyway. What if they have to sit on it for a long time before it sells? It wouldn't take getting burned too many times before there would be a no special order policy.

Educate the staff TO educate the customers. Then don't tie their hands. Allow and encourage the refusal of sales in the right situations. I worked at a decient LFS years ago and had absolutely no qualms about refusing sales. Usually all it took was telling them I wouldn't warrenty the fish. Yes, you will always run into the odd dishonest person who tells you they have the dream system, it never took more than a few months to figure them out. I think the point is minimizing the problem. As with most things you can never erradicate it.

BTW, ID sharks. I cant stand seeing those little guys swimming in the walmart/LFS tank knowing not a single one will ever grow to their full potential OR live a proper lifespan.

the stores need to be licensed not the buyers

clearly the lfs are to blame.....they need to take responsibility for what and to whom they sell

that pretty much sums it up!
