)V(ONSTER Flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) grow out thread.

That flathead is sexy. I love the speckling.

I think its amazing how convergent they are with other, similar cats that have similar patterns of behavior such as the Jau.

I regret the fact that American catfishes have been so dramatically overfished. I would love to see a modern specimen that achieved the size of the fish on record from largely reliable shipping manifests from the 1800s; 350 pound bluecats and 10 foot gator gars and whatnot. I firmly believe that big fish from the Mississippi could potentially rival fish from anywhere else on the Earth if their fisheries pressure wasn't so absurdly high. Oh well, I guess we'll never know though. :(

It's not just fishing pressure though. Man made dams have diverted, and channelized the Mississippi basin. This has also eliminated the natural flood plains that these large fish depend on to attain such immense sizes. Add in fishing pressure and it's like a one-two punch. There are commercial fishing records of flats over the 150 lbs mark of recent note, along with 150 lbs blues as well. I have not seen any real reports on flatheads fro the 1800s to see what their real potential could be. Some of those giant's bloodlines have died out also which means in effect we have reduced the max size of these fish. Also the amazon basin is undergoing the same down sizing as well. If you look at the size of fish such as the piraiba now vs. 100 years ago. They are less than half the size recorded then. It is not certain that all the old records are accurate though. :) I for one believe that there use to be 300 lbs blues and flatheads along with 1000 lbs piraiba in SA and also 400 lbs jau.

you guys like how he burried my granulosus? lol. He was excavating and spitting it on top of the gran. lol.

there is a little unknown river here in michigan that is filled with these cute little guys. there normally about 5 to 9in by august.

Oh wanted to add this even though it doesn't have much to do with the flathead. I moved the two suncats today to the 400 gal pond. They were pretty roughed up, but funny thing is since the flat went in they have been eating like crazy. Go figure. The big one was really feisty. I'm thinking I have a male and female sun cats. ONe is so slender and smaller than the other one. I need to do some research on sexing sun cats. I know they are endangered in their home range.

Sweet! There's none in Montana. Largest catfish is the channel, state record is like 30 lbs, then brown, and yellow bullheads, then stone cats. I think that may be all the species that we have here. This is a trout, salmon, pike, and walleye state. Sucks to be a cat person here lol. At least I can catch some of them and they make great food for my cats lol.

flat heads are very hard to find around here and i only have ever caught them in the one river, the Shiawassee River. i brought one home, had him for about a week. had power issue while i was out camping. i lost all my fish i had in there. and most of the fish in my other tank (filters didnt kick back on). congrats on your pick up. he looks really good and i love the coloration. i know hes in good hands

Lol, there's high expectations of me on this guy. Hopefully I don't have the same issues I was plagued with in the past such as power outages and heater failures. I think I will put back up heaters on all my tanks when I have the fund available. Replacing the glass ones with titanium ones. Next step would be to cage them so they don't get swallowed by the kitties.

Currently uploading a vid to youtube, but will throw some cool pics in here as well. I don't think it is eating, or isn't eating very much at this point. Decided to beef up my water changes a bit and see if that spikes his appetite!!! :) Anyone know the sex? Oddball???? lol, I know he can probably sex it as I think he has produced them in hatchery before. sorry for the kitty porn everyone lol.
