Ok since my last thread was getting off topic I felt it was necessary to start a new one. I will have better pics of him soon once I get his food ready. But first concerns: he seems to have some white blotches in his like I guess you could call "snout" , then also on the middle of his stomach he has what I believe to be poop. Also near the assumed poo there are also what I think are air bubbles, he also seems to have them in his side too, but i am not tottaly convinced they ARE airbubbles. Do you think these things will just come off or do I have to get in there with a net which I really don't want to do. He has only been in the tank for about 24 hrs and is eating pretty well. I also have some pretty good flow from the Aqueon 55 hob filter I have in there so u am surprised that hasn't taken It off of his stomach. He is VERY fat and is constantly exploring the tank. Thanks.

I know nothing about it, but I know they are gonna ask for pics. lol, figured I'd help you out and get that ball rollin. :)

if he was really fat beforehand and has stringy white poop could be parasites or some other form of blockage

Lol I knew that :P, not the greatest because this camera hates taking pics of any if my tanks so that's why it is extra blue, I think he is fat evacuee of all te clam and brine shrimp he ate ;). When I acclimated him his poo was alittle stringy but not white more brown. Also I realized why there is random stuff on his stomach and side, he is like Velcro! The sand is like stuck to his stomach lol. Is this normal for marine puffers? Pics:

Yes @ the velcro thing. I was gonna mention that mine constantly attracted stuff. He always had sand or bubbles stuck to him.

And as far as white blotches it just might be color variation. As they're settling in they can have pale spots on their body. Notice the one in my avatar has some pale-ish blotchy spots. It's because I took the picture while he was sleeping on the powerhead (where he always slept) and they get pale patches when they sleep or are not comfortable yet.

Yours looks nice and healthy. I wouldn't worry. :)
He doesn't have a sunken belly like the ones with obvious parasites.

Ok thanks! Now how do you tell mimic filefish from valentinis? Also alittle off topic but do yasha gobies and orange stripe prawn gobies sand sift? As u want something to sift my sand so u don't get any gas build ups. Will a sand sifting star be enough in a 29 so I won't need a sand sifting goby?

Ugh now I know one if the reasons he is acting alittle weird, my ammonia spiked. I have had a clown in there for 2 weeks and did a fish less cycle, but obviously I guess that wasn't enough time for the bacteria to colonize.

You need to get some ammonia and nitrite neutralizing stuff in there quick. Prime or Amquel or something similar.
If your LFS has some cycled bioballs or something, assuming they have healthy tanks, I'd see if they'll give you some. Live rock is too iffy since even if it's cured you might have die off moving it which will just add to the problem.

Mimic filefish vs valentini:
A filefish has completely different dorsal and anal fins. The filefish has two dorsal fins. One small dorsal fin at the front, and a long dorsal fin behind that, plus an elongated anal fin. They also have seemingly nonexistent pectoral fins.
The puffer has one small dorsal and anal fin.

Filefish (note long anal and dorsal fins, with 20+ rays, and very small pectoral fins):

Puffer (note much smaller anal and dorsal fins, with 8-9 rays, and easily visible pectoral fins):

Yep, I def have a valentini. Just I wish he had more color on his head like the one you posted. I think I may have screwed up the test, I also did a water change to see if that helps. Then the final reason is I left the clam in a little too long last night, and gave too much brine shrimp. Stupid my trying to force the fish to eat.

Your guy isn't underweight at all. Don't worry about loading the tank down with food to get him to eat. He'll eat when he's ready. They're not very picky as far as puffers go.

They are very messy though. They'll grind up food in their mouth and spit some out. Mine liked spitting it in the powerhead and watching it blow around the tank.
