Various degrees of fishkeeping...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How do you know how to pronounce binomial names (serious question)?

I only ever right them down (on mfk). Anyone got a link for pronounciation? Is it the same as latin?

yep, that does sound like a lot of "monster keepers" putting a pangasius cat in a 265. It's a good thing they only get like over a yard long. BTW, I'm not trying to pick apart your post... just trying to agree that even "monster keepers" have a tendency to put fish in way too small of a tank, only on a larger scale.

I think the 30-year old know it all can also be stated as the MFK know-it all some times for this forum, LOL.

you forgot

The Student with no job-

the guy that walks into the petstore...sees an awesome fish, spends his allowance from 12 weeks that he's saved up, and is broke for the next month but has a tight ass fish.

ME!

lol

The follower (can't think of a better name)

Comes into the store basing everything on what a friend (or complete stranger?) told them. "WHERE ARE YOUR AFRICANS CHICKLIDS THOSE ARE WHAT MY FRIEND SAID I NEED GIVE ME AGGRESSIVE FISH." Completely ignores anything you say and is fixated on the advice given prior.

Edit: as a personal account there were these people that came in regularly like that. They may have been sisters, the "experienced" one supposedly had a 75g with some larger cichlids. So she passed the "aggressive" advice onto the other one who had a recently acquired 29g (same thing right?). She bought gouramis and was under the impression they were super aggro so went on to buy various cichlids. It was hopeless...i think it was the family, that came in with them sometimes to crowd the fish area and look tough. I swear they were trying to intimate me because they dubbed me "crab ass" because apparently i was too strict.

I would fall into the following.......

The underated fishkeeper.

Pulls up in a beat down pickup truck. Wearing a greezy stocking hat and tore up jeans carrying the image of someone there to buy a 75LB bag of dog food that will chew up every cent to his name. Politely converses with the LFS people about a few sick fish, suggests treatment, voices disgust towards "the man" and "the system" of the chain store that will not allow intervention by someone that actually knows what they are doing. Buys a half dozen fish he refers to as "Dithers". After recieving a strange look from the emplyee he just explains "It's a long story". When asked by the employee about his set up at home he simply says "I'de love to tell you but you would think I'm lying."

Gives a polite "Thank you" and heads for the door.

This is the kind of person you NEVER mumble "It gets too big for your tank" to.

#10 The BS'er

Guy comes into your store asking for the biggest feeder rat you have. He "knows" he has the largest blah blah boa in history. One of these days he's going to get it DNA tested to prove it. He then goes on to tell you about the two 12" black piranha that he is keeping together in his undivided 150g tank. He also bought a vary rare darter a year ago from the LFS down the street, it was sold to him as a feeder, it's worth over $5000. He has a 450 gallon tank. He has a friend who is going to help him build the biggest tank in town. (All things he really told me)

The rest of the list looks really good, but this is a type of customer I see fairly often. One that can one up anything, that anyone has, but in fact is totally full of garbage. The snake is not the breed he thinks it is, he doesn't have a $5k fish, and his 450 is a 90g. Yet don't argue with him.

Haha.. these really made me laugh I worked at a pet store for two years and all of these are as true as can be. I think I should add one though, this one always cracked me up.

7. The tough guy
He walks in, listening to hip hop on his ipod. Usually wearing baggy pants and wearing a fitted cap sideways. Goes up to you and asks "Cheif, where are the pirahnas?". Ends up buying a 30 gallon tank, no heaters, no filters, 4 pirahnas and a bag of feeders. I always hated seeing people walk out the store like that. I never sold fish to people like that. :WTF:

I've seen this one a lot too, but not always dressed like that. Sometimes just average looking college kids.
