Vent my midas

You don't need the vent with this fish, it would help but you don't need it. It's body structure, head shape, body length and fins are enough to accurately sex this fish;)

Male petsmart midas/red devil have a thicker body and have longer dorsal fins, not to mention that their head has more of an upward slope from the nose to the forehead. This fish has a long snout then the upward forehead.

Here is a picture of my old pair for reference. Male is on the bottom female is on top. Notice the difference in body depth, he is much taller then she is. It's hard to make out the difference in the head shape because of the angle but it was noticable.

Now you need to get a male so you can try some breeding. They are actually great parents.:)

sorry my friend. venting is the way you want to get used to doing. this long fins and body portions crap is for the birds. also females can get very nice broad heads and sport a nice hump too.
 
I agree that venting is the only 100% way to sex (do you remember SinisterKisses' "Draco" who, as a 6" female, had a big hump?)

But I must admit, I would expect my fish to have just a bit more bulk at her size is she was male. One thing I am surprised by is her lack of aggression as of yet. My 4" con tries to beat her up and she's always fleeing from him, never flares or fights back. Luckily the con himself is always chased by the GT so he gets easily distracted. :-)

:ROFL: If you know your species and which characteristics to look for between the sexes visually you CAN sex Amphilophus species;)

At the size of the fish shown above these traits are very clear.

If my method is so off base I guess we'll wait an see if I'm proved wrong. Until then I'm sticking with female based on the body structure of the fish, I'm betting I'm right;)

And before I get misunderstood on this post I would like to state that venting is a sure fire way to determine sex. I'm simply saying that physical aspects can be used for sexing too, even in Amphilophus.

bastard! Lol yeah it was a female. The sexing by fins usually never fails with me either but some are difficult.
 
It was this type of a responce I was trying to avoid bro, LOL

I know the method isn't 100% all the time (I never claimed it was) I simply said it could be done. Some fish especially Amphilophus can be tricky. It helps that I've been into Amphilophus species for years;) mainly Midas types.

The fish pictured first in this thread is pretty easy (in my eyes anyway) to sex as female. Yours was harder I'll admit:nilly:

So do I get some cool prize now for passing?:headbang2
