Vent my midas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tug kept MANY amphilophus species for along time now.. So I usually just go with what he says when it comes to sexing Amphilophus...

Vent is the best way in my opinion.. But the next best thing when it comes to blurry pics is Tug :D And that is not 100% ;) But it works for me as you can see with Amphilophus ;)

I knew you'd be piping in sooner or later:ROFL:

Good to hear from you bro, how ya been? Shoot me a p.m so we don't hijack Natalie's thread.

It was this type of a responce I was trying to avoid bro, LOL

I know the method isn't 100% all the time (I never claimed it was) I simply said it could be done. Some fish especially Amphilophus can be tricky. It helps that I've been into Amphilophus species for years;) mainly Midas types.

The fish pictured first in this thread is pretty easy (in my eyes anyway) to sex as female. Yours was harder I'll admit:nilly:

So do I get some cool prize now for passing?:headbang2

No but now you get to sex some more of my amphilophus fish lol.

I'll post what I think they are.

walmart devil - female?

f1 lyonsi - clueless, grew the slowest out of 4 but is very aggressive. Leaning towars female though.

f1 saggitae - female, thought she was a male since she grew just as quickly as my dominant male but now I'm not 100% sure. Have yet to see her tube yet.

confirmed male saggitae

O.K I guess I'll play along;)

Top picture looks female, the fins won't help at all at her size but the head shape is a give away. Notice how far back the forehead starts. I think she is a a little small to sex positivly though.

Lyonsi (man I miss mine:cry:) She looks just like mine did at that size. So I'm taking female. Aggression has nothing to do with sex, I've learned that the hard way a few times. If you have a higher percentage of females in your group then there will be aggression for the top spot, just like dominant and sub-dominant males.

Now on to the one I disagree with you on. I think your looking at a sub-dominant male. The body is to tall and the head structure fits with a male. I bet if you seperate him and throw a female in with him he'll change before your eyes. The head bump on these guys is largely due to their dominance in the tank. The largest strongest male will display the best features, for obvious reasons, the females. I've seen this in several of my fish but once you take the dominant male out of the equation the low man on the pecking order transforms into a stud!

Looks like you have your sexing down pretty good my friend I don't think you really need anybody's help;) I'm curious to see how your saggitae turns out. You have a beautiful male already so you should send me the sub dominant one;) Keep me posted on their progression:headbang2

O.K if we are turning this into 'guess the sex' thread then I'll play too:popcorn:

Bigspizz, with the high body and short snout I'd guess male...am I right?

Here is mine, first is a petsmart midas/R.D (not the same fish as I posted above), second one is a sp. 'chancho' and the last one is just a reference to my female lyonsi. Let's see it guys what do you think. I do know the sex of the other two fish, so I can tell you if your right or not.

One more, Amphilophus amarillo

I figured that was the way this was going to go LOL

I say you can sex by visual traits and so everyone posts their fish and as soon as I get one wrong they say....'hah I told you sooo' LOL

Bigspizz you have to admit that is no typical female you have there. I said Amphilophus was difficult and it's monster steriod freak females like that one that make it hard. LOL

I still stand behind my methods ;)
